i think the video really clears things up. it is all from the guys point of view. he is in love with a girl who doesn't put in the same effort as him and places her job etc over him. "don't you think i knew about all your pretty girlfriends, but i waited for you gave you time to decide," meaning he could have easily dated one of her friends or maybe just another woman in general but he waited for her. finally, the chorus, i think this is him knowing how good of a bf he has been and hes going to find someone else who will appreciate him for that, and the new girl will be singing "here comes my man".

At first I thought it was from the guy's perspective (as per many below). Then I listened some more to the lyrics and it "clicked" because none of the concerns and issues seemed typically male.

I'm with Kamikaze Dreamer and Jeffrey. I definitely feel like this story is from the woman's perspective, which is incredibly strange.
To me the song is about a woman who has left someone that wasn't too great, made her cry, took his job more seriously than her, had a couple of other girls on the side. So she leaves, and decides to grow her hair back out and look for someone new, let the night decide who is better, etc.
The chorus is her running into the old guy on the streets, but her new guy is coming along, so she's just like, hey bro, it's good seeing you and all, but I've moved on.
The bridge complicates it for me a little as the background vocals say "one of these, one of these, one of these days" and makes me feel like maybe this didn't really happen to the speaker, but is something she is hoping will happen.
Song is still cool, but strange to sing if you're a guy. I can't think of another song that is sung by a man, but is told in the first person perspective of a woman. It's either the smartest thing ever or the most crazy... I hope Gaslight doesn't go the way of Against Me! ha ha ha.

I quite like the idea that it is from both sides. The guy is madly in love with her, and she loves him, but she works too much at her job and doesn't give him enough time to feel truly loved.
He therefore finds other girls to pass the time that he thinks she doesn't know about.
They've both done wrong.

This song somewhat confuses me. I'm not sure, but from the first few listens and attempts at interpretation, the story's being told from the perspective of a woman, whose man doesn't appear to appreciate her and kind of mucks things around a bit and she eventually gets sick of it.
Not totally sure what the chorus represents, "Listen Honey, here comes my man." First impressions are that the woman is saying that to another, different man, or saying it to her current man, when she finds love with the aforementioned. Dunno. But if it's the former, it kind of blows my original interpretation out of the water. But whatever, another solid record from the finest band in the Universe, although I must say, not as good as the rest they've produced.

Unless the writer was homosexual (which he's not) the line "Listen, honey, here comes my man," wouldn't make very much sense if he was the one making the statement. But he isn't.
He's quoting the girl in this situation. He was waiting for her, expecting for them to work it out to be together. But instead, she's already dating someone else.
There is the possibility that it's written from a female perspective, and the chorus is literal, but that's unlikely since the verses suggest that the character is going to seek love elsewhere, rather than having already found it.
