Dead Letters Lyrics

Vexation
Internal void
My dreams are getting darker and darker

Dim my lights
Time is frail
You shut my mind
But oh well

Trapped and choked
Erased my trail
Split the chest
My heart couldn't feel more pale

Only once could I see clear

Vexation
Internal void
My dreams are getting darker and darker

This life before me
Its blood runs so still
The call of the bird
The song that makes the hours go

The change inactive
Dead letters from these words

Dim my lights
One by one
The sordid pale
Broken run

Confined in escape
On burnt grass
Below the crest
Lier in wait for the ending

Only once could I see clear

My dreams are getting darker and darker
This life before me
Its blood runs so still
The call of the bird

Songs that make the hours go

Definitely heard some Tool influence here! Absolutely love this song. The only part I find a little iffy is the very last line, I dont think it really fits with the song musically. But still, I cant wait for the album to be released! Anyways, heres what I think the song meangs:

With the first part, I think he is saying that he feels like something/someone has taken his freedom from him ("You shut my mind / But oh well / Trapped and choked / Erased my trail") and it worries/frustrates him ("Vexation / Internal void") to the point where he doesnt see any hope (his dreams getting "darker and darker"

With the chorus, I think he is saying whatever/whoever is holding him back is keeping him from doing anything with his life ("This life before me / Its blood runs so still"). The call of the bird could be referring to crows, which are usually used to symbolize death, and their song which "makes the hours go" could be him waiting for death, because he has no hope left.

"The change inactive" could mean that no change has happened, and he doesnt think any change will occur. "Dim my lights /One by one / The sordid pale / Broken run" could be his hope (lights) being crushed (dimmed) over time, until there isnt much hope left and his attempts at running from whatever did this to him are unsuccessful.

"Confined in escape / On burnt grass / Below the crest / Lier in wait for the ending" This could be how he tries to escape, but like the lines before he is unsuccessful, so he lays in wait for his demise. And the lines repeated afterwards seem to corroborate this.

Im not sure if Im completely right, but thats what I get from the lyrics

Song Meaning

I'm not sure why it submitted my comment without line breaks??

I agree, I definitely hear the Tool influence in this song, particularly the opening riff. As far as the meaning of this song goes however, I'm a little confused. Typically with this genre of music there's alot of symbolism and cryptic content with the lyrics. The chorus for me stands out as I can't help but think of the lyrics literally. Phrases like ''This life before me, its blood runs so still'' could refer to him in the process of murdering another person (life lying there before him). That's what I assume him to mean anyway. Later on in the song also, with lines such as ''confined in escape on burnt grass, lier in wait for the ending'', suggests he has a victim laying there waiting to be killed. I could be wrong but thats what it provokes in my mind anyway. It may be about a dream he had where he murdered another person. hence the ''my dreams are getting darker and darker'' line. Thats my thoughts anyway.

Am I the only one remembered of TOOL's Jambi by the opening riff? By the way, I feel some potential here, sounds a bit like the previous (Night Is The New Day) album.

Not badat all, but not too catchy for me after the first listening. (But it was the same with Jambi which is now one of my all-time favourites from Tool.)

Maybe you should all be listening to Oasis and "My Big Mouth' instead of such depressing songs. One would think you don't have a significant other and aren't spending the holidays either with them in person or over the phone. LOL. Woe the depression. Don't ya know it's the new modern kind where you get kissed, have sex, whisper I love you in her ear, and then whine about how bad life is.

Fuck off. Merry Holiday.

why comment on a song you dont even like? 'depressing' songs have just as much musical importance as noel gallagher singing about his ballsack. different people like different music.
