Maybe Not Tonight Lyrics
Echos of another time
Playing lightly on my mind
There's many rivers still to cross
Temper the bitterness of love
Though what you say is true
This might be it for me and you
Maybe we can draw that line
Maybe another time
Well I wanna do what's right
But maybe not tonight
Memories of another town
Those pretty eyes, that pretty frown
And in the long grass where we lay
And let the whole world fall away
And though in time we walked apart
You were always in my heart
Maybe we should say goodbye
But maybe not tonight
I remember you were just a child
Burning brightly and running wild
We married on an August night
No priest, no church, just the big moon shining bright
Maybe we should be moving on
And figure what is done is done
Maybe we should break those vows
Oh, but maybe not right now
Maybe we should do what's right
Baby not tonight
Maybe we should both just do what's right
But baby not tonight
Playing lightly on my mind
There's many rivers still to cross
Temper the bitterness of love
This might be it for me and you
Maybe we can draw that line
Maybe another time
But maybe not tonight
Those pretty eyes, that pretty frown
And in the long grass where we lay
And let the whole world fall away
You were always in my heart
Maybe we should say goodbye
But maybe not tonight
Burning brightly and running wild
We married on an August night
No priest, no church, just the big moon shining bright
And figure what is done is done
Maybe we should break those vows
Oh, but maybe not right now
Baby not tonight
Maybe we should both just do what's right
But baby not tonight

This song is quite straightforward. The singer and his lover have a long history and a lot of genuine love for one another, but they have grown apart due to both parties undergoing growth and changes that render them less compatible than they once were. The singer (and quite likely his partner) both know that separation is inevitable, yet neither can help but reminisce about all the good times and genuine love they had for one another, and neither can bring themselves to just rip off the band-aid; even though both parties are fully aware that it must be done sooner or later...
very relatable song. very beautiful.
Relationships change, and people change, and sometimes that's not what we want but it's inevitable in life. The person you love and the time you love them won't always be the same, and when everything's changed so much all you can do is agree to let go of each other. Even if you know letting go and moving on is what needs to be done, you still want to hold on just another day, leaving it for another night.
