Seven Cities Of Gold Lyrics

A man can lose his past, in a country like this
Wandering aimless
Parched and nameless
A man could lose his way, in a country like this
Canyons and cactus
Endless and trackless

Searching through a grim eternity
Sculptured by a prehistoric sea

Seven Cities of Gold
Stories that fired my imagination
Seven Cities of Gold
A splendid mirage in this desolation
Seven Cities of Gold
Glowing in my dreams, like hallucinations
Glitter in the sun like a revelation
Distant as a comet or a constellation

A man can lose himself, in a country like this
Rewrite the story
Recapture the glory
A man could lose his life, in a country like this
Sunblind and friendless
Frozen and endless

The nights grow longer, the farther I go
Wake to aching cold and a deep Sahara of snow

That gleam in the distance could be heaven's gate
A long-awaited treasure at the end of my cruel fate

Perhaps a commentary on western culture, a shared fantasy of success that blinds us to what is truly valuable. The pursuit of this material pipedream leads us down a path that helps us lose who we are. i see this tying into the theme of the album by reminding us that true spirituality connects us with life, not wealth.

Or.... It could be about Ancient Babylon. The first 'empire' that was founded by Nimrod, "A warrior against God" It's long believed that he, his 'family' and their "spiritual rituals" formed and began Satan's counterfeit 'Church' of Christ...which really IS an organized "church religion" as we know it. It's a diversion to Christlikeness. So began Religion, Man's laws governing it and it continues decieving many against living a life of true Christianity, which is about relationship, not religion. Rush also references "heavens gate" which is well known to be associated with the 'tower of Babyl'...another man made 'path to god'. Nimrod's wife, Semeramis, even setup a mock 'resurrection' of Tamuz, her son. Thus creating the counterfeit "queen of heaven" and her 'resurrected miracle boy'. Sound familiar?
