Halo Effect Lyrics
What did I see?
Fool that I was
A goddess with wings on her heels
All my illusions
Projected on her
The ideal that I wanted to see
What did I know?
Fool that I was
Little by little I learned
My friends were dismayed
To see me betrayed
But they knew they could never tell me
What did I care?
Fool that I was
Little by little I burned
Maybe sometimes
There might be a flaw
But how pretty the picture was back then
What did I do?
Fool that I was
To profit from youthful mistakes?
It's shameful to tell
How often I fell
In love with illusions again
So shameful to tell
Just how often I fell
In love with illusions again
A goddess with wings on her heels...
Fool that I was
A goddess with wings on her heels
All my illusions
Projected on her
The ideal that I wanted to see
Fool that I was
Little by little I learned
My friends were dismayed
To see me betrayed
But they knew they could never tell me
Fool that I was
Little by little I burned
Maybe sometimes
There might be a flaw
But how pretty the picture was back then
Fool that I was
To profit from youthful mistakes?
It's shameful to tell
How often I fell
In love with illusions again
Just how often I fell
In love with illusions again

Perhaps more than the apparent youthful infatuation that it appears at first read. Neil uses two psychological terms in this song, including the title and 'projection' which have a lot to do with seeing things not just as we want to. but with our own envies, needs, wishes, innequities etc... By making somebody or something better in our image, we are somehow trying to make ourselves better. But as we learn with experience, this rarely works.
"In love with illusions again"
If only one could retain .. clear sight.
The first verse talks about trusting the wrong person, while the second Is refuting to be cheated on or falling in love with the wrong person. The third in my opinion speak about a life changing mistake of a miss oprtunity that you'll regret and that we must learn to take all things as they come, that last a final verse is one that look forward saying hell profit from the mistake but learning but that hell along the way he'll falling again into traps and everything he talked about above again.
P.S this is my own opinion
