Don't Move Lyrics

And I, I'll hurt you
More than you will ever know
And I, I want you
More than you will ever know

We paired off in the violence
We paired off in the violence
So we were paired off in the violence

And I touch you
When things are getting sore
And I, I'll hurt you
More than you will ever know, we won't find her

We paired off in the violence
Paired off in the violence
So we were paired off in the violence

You fit around me
And you fit around me, we won't find her
You fit around me
And fit around me, we glare overnight

You call when the leaves all fall
Everybody's on sight but you are the violence
You crawl to the windowsill
Outside it's still, by the neck you hold us

We're all falling, we're all falling
It's all fear and a lie

You crawl to the windowsill
Outside it's still, by the neck you hold us
You call when the leaves won't fall
Everybody's unsafe, but you are the violence

And I, I'll hurt you
More than you will ever know
And I, I want you
More than you will ever know, we won't find her

We paired off in the violence
We paired off in the violence
So we were paired off in the violence

Cover art for Don't Move lyrics by Twilight Sad, The

Some of the lyrics are hard to transcribe (and so inaccurate) and possibly vary slightly with performances, so the lyrics listed should probably be taken with a pinch of salt, but for me this beautiful song is about:

  • A romantic pairing from either a specific violent situation or a violent upbringing, though possibly more one-sided, as the singer feels their feelings will never fully be known, the person cannot be fully reached

  • The women seems like perhaps she is quite damaged and drawn back towards the cycle of violence (a possible reference to her attacking another woman), though the singer longs for her, to help her, to escape that cycle

  • "You fit around me", could be both a sexual reference and/or a feeling they are alike, and so there are made to be together.

  • In some live versions of this song it sounds like James is interchanging the lyrics to be "I /love/ you more than you will ever know", which ties back to the idea of love/vulnerability/hurting

The lyric "It's all fear and a lie", is perhaps not accurate, and sometimes I hear or maybe imagine: "She disappeared in the night" or "You see the fear in her eye", perhaps relating to the victim of an attack (e.g. "we won't find her").

Anyhow, it's such an incredible song, full of tension, authenticity, and of course massively underrated.
