Shooting Star Lyrics

Close your tired eyes, relax and then
Count from 1 to 10 and open them
All these heavy thoughts will try to weigh you down
But not this time

Way up in the air, you're finally free
And you can stay up there right next to me
All this gravity will try to pull you down
But not this time

When the sun goes down and the lights burn out
Then it's time for you to shine
Brighter than a shooting star
So shine no matter where you are

Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light
'Cause it's time for you to shine
Brighter than a shooting star
So shine no matter where you are tonight

Woah-oh, woah-oh, woah-oh

Brighter than a shooting star
Shine no matter where you are tonight

Gaze into my eyes when the fire starts
And fan the flames so hot it melts our hearts
Oh, the pouring rain will try to put it out
But not this time

Let your colors burn and brightly burst
Into a million sparks that all disperse
And illuminate a world that'll try to bring you down
But not this time

When the sun goes down and the lights burn out
Then it's time for you to shine
Brighter than a shooting star
So shine no matter where you are

Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light
'Cause it's time for you to shine
Brighter than a shooting star
So shine no matter where you are tonight

A thousand heart beats beat in time
It makes this dark planet come alive
So when the lights flicker out tonight
You gotta shine

When the sun goes down and the lights burn out
Then it's time for you to shine
Brighter than a shooting star
So shine no matter where you are

Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light
'Cause it's time for you to shine
Brighter than a shooting star
So shine no matter where you are tonight

Woah-oh, woah-oh, woah-oh

Brighter than a shooting star
So shine no matter where you are tonight.

Cover art for Shooting Star lyrics by Owl City

This sounds the most like Owl City out of the songs on the new EP. It is the most twinkly out of them, but still has the Dr. Luke mainstream synth influenced sounds. The lyrics, though, follows the Owl City formula very faithfully. The title is a beautiful object and allegorizes the title to a simple but universal feeling that is explored creatively and enchantingly through the song. However the meaning is verrryyyyy generic and sounds almost toooo identical to Katy Perry's "Firework", about being anybody in the world and shining bright no matter what and no matter who you are.

My Opinion

Well, the christians interpretations have a point, but most people who hear Owl City are non christians and is directed mostly to them. Without any religious content, here is my interpretation: Now, it has many to say the truth. RaffiHour is very accurate, as its inspirational, however, the key for me is in this part: "Way up in the air, you're finally free And you can stay up there, right next to me All this gravity will try to pull you down But not this time." Now, due to that, one can say that it could mean the following: It could be seen as the one who sends the message (the lyrics) has an girlfriend that could have low self-esteem:

Close your tired eyes, relax and then Count from one to ten and open them All these heavy thoughts will try to weigh you down But not this time Bassically here he is saying: Relax, forget about all what has happened to you. He is encouraging her to relax and to calm down.

Way up in the air, you're finally free And you can stay up there, right next to me All this gravity will try to pull you down But not this time He means that with him, she can be herself, and that she can be happy and free with him. The gravity could be a metaphor about her sad toughts comming back and not allowing her to be happy with him.

When the sun goes down, and the lights burn out Then it's time for you to shine Brighter than a shooting star, so shine no matter where you are Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light 'cause it's time for you to shine Brighter than a shooting star, so shine no matter where you are, tonight.

It may mean that with him, she will shine and be as good as possible. Her pain will be forgotten and she will show the world how great she is, and she will no longer feel bad about herself.

Gaze into my eyes, when the fire starts And fan the flames so hot, it melts our hearts Oh, the pouring rain will try to put it out But not this time

It talks about their love, their passion for each other and how they warm each other hearts. The rain may mean their conflicts and differences.

Let your colors burn and brightly burst Into a million sparks that all disperse And illuminate a world that'll try to bring you down But not this time

He is urging her to show how good she is to the world and to color the lifes of others. He is also telling her that people will not agree with her or hate her, but to not to give up

Thats my toughts

My Interpretation

I completely agree with you.

Part of the interpretation of this song depends on this (post from Adam Young's official Owl City blog): http://owlcityblog.com/2012/05/29/the-world-will-try-to-bring-you-down/ .

The song references light many times, and light is constantly attributed to God in a metaphorical sense, to symbolize how His holiness drives out sin, and reveals the truth hidden in the darkness.

Primary reference:John 1: "1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world"

And so, when Adam writes, "fill the darkest night with a brilliant light cause it's time for you to shine," he's referring to this: "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven" [Matthew 5:16]

It's written generically enough that non-Christians don't understand the lyrics (note: "the darkness did not comprehend [the light]"), but in reality, the whole song is a Christian song encouraging believers to share their faith and to do good works for the Kingdom of God.

The references to "xyz will try to bring you down" refers to being discouraged from sharing our faith, being made to think that it's not worth it, or that we're not doing a good job. The flame that melts our hearts is a reference to a verse in Proverbs that allegorically depicts God as a "refiner and purifier of silver" [by passing through "the fire" of trials in life, our souls are purified], as well as a reference to the Lord being a "consuming fire," and other verses elsewhere referring to our hearts burning/being on fire for God.

tl;dr

In Summary, Shooting Star is like Meteor Shower--a song dedicated to God, without mentioning Him explicitly, although this one is addressed to Christians.

Lyric Correction

One of my favourites from The Midsummer Station, though it is unfortunately similar to Katy Perry's "Firework". I'd like to think it's purely a case of both songs aiming for the same feeling - that music-formed image of bursting upwards into brilliant light. Shooting Star certainly feels like an Owl City song.

(From my religious perspective)

1st Verse: "all these thoughts will try to weigh you down, but not this time" means that the person has a new/stronger relationship with God and can no longer be swayed or persuaded by the world, because the follow Him.

2nd Verse: The person has been freed by their decision to follow Christ (one of chris tomlin's song comes to mind.. "My chains are gone, I've been set free.."), and like the preceding verse, the person follows Him now so he or she cannot be separated from God by anyone else's thoughts or actions

Chorus: I think this is refers to the 'darkness' in the world, how screwed up our world is; Adam's saying that the follower of Christ is now the light of the world, and now they must shine their light wherever they go (be disciples)

3rd Verse: pretty much the same idea as the other two

4th Verse: along the same lines as the chorus; spread the word. be disciples. be an image of Christ.

5th verse: "A thousand heartbeats beat in time and makes this dark planet come alive" <- i see this as all of the followers of Christ having the same goal in mind and coming together to spread the word(being on the same page, more or less).
