The Space Between Lightning and Thunder Lyrics
The party is over
I'm tired but sober
I think my coat was on the bed
I bet you wonder why I linger
I'm rarely the last to leave
This is the last time
This is the last time
If choices depend on situations
You've done the same, the same in my shoes
But I held an axe that could've felled a path but
I was too scared to go it alone
This is the last time that you will see me
I guess it's now or never to tell me how you're feelin'
This is the last time that you will see me
I guess it's now or never to tell you how I'm feelin'
We once thought we'd have unlimited time
Just keep flying west
The sun won't set on us
I've rigged the watch on your wrist
With secret Swiss crystal tines of pitch
I feel alive when weather is violent
I live to smell the change in the air
Thunder and lightning
Hasten their timing
We must be in close range
This is the last time
This is the last time
This is the last time
I'm tired but sober
I think my coat was on the bed
I bet you wonder why I linger
I'm rarely the last to leave
This is the last time
You've done the same, the same in my shoes
But I held an axe that could've felled a path but
I was too scared to go it alone
I guess it's now or never to tell me how you're feelin'
This is the last time that you will see me

"We once thought we'd have unlimited time" fits better with the theme of prolonging everything (rigged watch, flying with the sun, etc).
And, I'm not sure, but it sounds like "We must be in close range" at the end of that refrain.
Thanks again =) I think you're right about both. The only reason I ended up settling on "fork's range" was because (a) I couldn't get myself to hear anything else and (b) I was thinking about "forks" of lightning. I will change these right now...

Anyone have other thoughts for the "With secrets with crystal times of pitch" line? That was just my best approximation. Or alternately, does anyone have an explanation as to how that line as I've written it could make more than just vague sense?

I'm guess this has to do with prolonging a relationship, when you know there's an inevitable end to it, like one partner is moving away, going to college, etc.
What with the whole "This is the last time you will see me" and "we thought we had unlimited time" I'm getting the vibe that there's someone in his life he has to let go, but he is reluctant to do so.
Furthermore, people use the amount of time between when you see lightning and hear thunder as a sort of tool for determining how far away a storm is. I think The Space Between Lightning and Thunder plays into this because he's coming down to the inevitable moment of breakup.

I think these lines mean that he could have ended it ages ago, but he was afraid of being alone/being without his significant other.
