Overchewer Lyrics

Can an old piper play a new tune?
Can an old fiddler ever scribble a merrier song?
Every day I long to write my song for Sandy
Suddenly I hear that voice I fear come back to me and say
"Put away your pen my foolish friend, the song they sung when you were young
Died away"

Can an old dreamer spin a new dream?
Can an old dog be taught to learn a new routine?
When did someone born to croon in June get heavy?
Will I take a fall when, like a fool, I should have made a trip?
Will I have to do the Boogaloo and with each step say "Man I'm hip!"?
When I'm hip

Will I ever learn to eat organic food?
Listening to Ravi Shankar in the nude?
Everywhere I go will people know, when I play my guitar
"Here comes the middle-aged, silent majority, Geritol rock 'n' roll star"?

Will I ever learn to walk without my shoes?
Meditate for hours with Sunset Strip gurus?
Will I have to learn to thumb a ride 'cause Nader hates my car?
I'm just a middle-aged, silent majority, Geritol rock 'n' roll star

But I must make music somehow, and I've got to reach the young
'Cause the poem that I sung, they have forgot
There was a time when time was young, the children knew my song
And once you've tasted their delight, you don't forget it overnight
And you long to have that special love again

Can an old piper play a new tune?
Can an old fiddler ever scribble a merrier song?
Every day I long to write my song for Sandy
Suddenly I hear that voice I fear come back to me and say
"Put away your pen my friend, the songs they sung when you were young
Died away"

Will I ever learn to eat organic food?
Listening to Ravi Shankar in the nude?
Everywhere I go will people know, when I play my guitar
"There goes the middle-aged, silent majority, Geritol rock 'n' roll star"

I submitted these lyrics - having simply transcribed them by listening... Does anyone know if I got them right?! Has anyone got a more authoritative source?!

In other news, what an incredible song, eh?

@ben_wren Thanks for introducing me to the word “Geritol”. I always heard it that way but thought I must’ve got it wrong because I didn’t know there was such a word.

I think your transcription is spot on. The only slight uncertainty for me is the line “When I'm hip”. I can’t help thing that there’s an “a” in there. I.e. “When I’m a [something that rhymes with hip]”.

Anyway, I agree this is an incredibly great song. I have it on the “Ain’t It Funny” album, which I love.

Thanks again.
