The State of Dreaming Lyrics
Millions of girls float on their one quote
Living on their last hope, on their last hope
I live my life inside a dream
Only waking when I sleep
I would sell my sorry soul, if I could have it all
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
All I really want is to be wonderful
People in this town they, they can be so cruel
I live my life inside a dream,
only waking when I sleep
If I could sell my sorry soul, I would have it all
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
If only you knew my dear,
How I live my life in fear
If only you knew my dear,
How I know my time is near
Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
Living on their last hope, on their last hope
I live my life inside a dream
Only waking when I sleep
I would sell my sorry soul, if I could have it all
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
People in this town they, they can be so cruel
I live my life inside a dream,
only waking when I sleep
If I could sell my sorry soul, I would have it all
My life is a play, is a play, is a play
Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
How I live my life in fear
If only you knew my dear,
How I know my time is near
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
living in the state of dreaming
living in a make-believe land
living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming

Marina said this is about Marilyn Monroe and how so many girls look up to her when in fact she was a deeply troubled woman, which doesn't get spoken about often.
I believe that this song is solely about the factory produced lives today and how she puts on a show to hide herself form it all. "Millions of girls float on that one quote" I am assuming that means millions of girls are decieved by the words "I love you" and how basically she wants no part and puts on makeup and changes who she is so she won't be caught up in the typical girl's life. She essentially puts herself in a big dream where none of this exists. "My life is a play, is a play, is a play"
I love this song so so so much!
mee too:) me too:)
mee too:) me too:)
This song is said by Marina to be about Marilyn Monroe and how she sees the world now and while living. So I will break my interpretation down to each lyric.
Millions of girls float on their one quote (here she speaks of Marilyn's several quotes such as : "It's better to be unhappy alone than unhappy with someone")
Living on their last hope, on their last hope (Here I am not entirely sure what she meant but I think it's how most girls are insecure about themselves and depressed as well)
I live my life inside a dream Only waking when I sleep (Here she "lives" as if she were in heaven and when she sleeps all the bad memories/thoughts and nightmares returns, because lets face it she was a troubled woman)
I would sell my sorry soul, if I could have it all (she didn't have it all as in she didn't have all the emotional possessions she wished to have)
My life is a play, is a play, is a play My life is a play, is a play, is a play (All of her actions and feelings that she displayed were all false and she acted as she was completely fine when she wasn't)
Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming living in a make-believe land living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming (She lives as if she were in a dream and nothing of the outside world interfered)
All I really want is to be wonderful (I think here she meant the she didn't really feel wonderful from all the troubles in her life)
People in this town they, they can be so cruel (I really wouldn't know what this means maybe harsh judgement from men/press, she was alive in a time where women were objectified -although to this day they still are- )
I live my life inside a dream, only waking when I sleep If I could sell my sorry soul, I would have it all My life is a play, is a play, is a play My life is a play, is a play, is a play Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming living in a make-believe land living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming(I already covered this)
If only you knew my dear, How I live my life in fear (Right here I think she is talking to someone she loved/or a family member of how she is fearing the judgement and how she is fearing the objectification and if people did find out it was a play. After all she was a major sex symbol)
If only you knew my dear, How I know my time is near (She was planning her suicide and already knew when it was going to happen -even though some rumor her death was because of a overdose-)
Yeah I’ve been living in the state of dreaming living in a make-believe land living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming living in the state of dreaming living in a make-believe land living in the state of dreaming, of dreaming, of dreaming
My life is a play, is a play, is a play (Already Covered that)
What do I know though, I think this would be wrong but hey this is just me and my thoughts. Still this is another masterpiece by Marina Lambrini Diamindis
I know it's not about this... but I see it as someone who suffers from depersonalization. This means that you experienceyour life as if it's a dream, you don't feel completely real even when you know you're alive (I live my live inside a dream. Only waking when I sleep). Youll give anything to take this feeling away from you, like being a different person (If I could sell my sorry soul, I would have it all).
The "my life is a play" line applies perfectly because that what you feel, like you're just on a scene like a movie, play or videogame.
You feel the need of breaking the routine and feeling something real (All I really wants is to be wonderful). And also, people can be cruel because they won't understand unless they have experienced it.
With this disorder you tend to think a lot about how the end of your life is close and question the meaning of existing and you live with fear of becoming crazy for having this thoughts.
That was not Marina's intention with the song, but I feel very identified with the song when I think about it this way and makes me feel better, but that's the objective of music, right?
Missme is correct. The one quote is Monroe's "I just want to be wonderful".
