Sex Yeah Lyrics

Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex
Yeah
Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex
(La la la)

Nothing is provocative anymore
Even for kids
No room for imagining
'Cause everyone's seen everything
Question what the TV tells you
Question what a pop star sells you
Question mom and question dad
Question good and question bad

If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be)
If sex in our society (didn't tell a girl who she would be)
'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me

Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex
Yeah
Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex
(La la la)

If women were religiously
Recognized sexually
We wouldn't have to feel the need to show our ass-
-ets to feel free
Been there, done that
Got the t-shirt
Sold my soul
And yeah the truth hurts
Tired image of a star
Acting naughtier than we really are

If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be)
If sex in our society (didn't tell a guy who he should be)
'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me

Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex
Yeah
Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex
(La la la)

All my life I've felt it deep inside of me
All this time was fighting for what I believe
All my life I've tried to hide what history has given me

If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be)
If sex in our society (didn't tell a guy who he should be)
'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me

Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex
Yeah
Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex, Sex
(La la la)

Gender roles and biases.

Song Meaning
Cover art for Sex Yeah lyrics by Marina and the Diamonds

In this song, I think Marina is trying to get the point across that sex in our socieciety is fake and overexposed. Everyone already knows everything. It basically now just controls everyone. And it puts a fake label on people. "If women were religously recognixed sexually, we wouldn't have to feel the need to show our a**"This part is saying, if men recognized a women's appeal regualarly, they wouldn't go to great lengths to try to get attention. So, niw, sex is a degrading and abused topic, and its not fair for people to be judged, or labled, because of what others have done for attention.

My Interpretation

I think this song is about slut-shaming and the way our society makes women sex objects. Nothing is provocative anymore Even for kids No room for imagining 'Cause everyone's seen everything

  • Here she tells about how all adds and everything kids and adults watch has something sexually in it - how sex is no more a intimate thing between two persons, but an object to sell things or get attention. The "Question" part for me means, that you shouldn't just blindfold yourself and listen to what everybody says, because as she mentioned above, everything today is sexualized, and you should question what everybody tells you, because they may seem clever or kind, but they could still fill you up with nothing but crap. So question every opinion and make sure, you agree/disagree with it. If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be) If sex in our society (didn't tell a guy who he should be) 'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me The chorus is for me very much about slut-shaming and the woman as a sex object. In all history, the woman has been seen as a sex object, but also someone who had to dress proper, take care of house and kids and at the same time not being "slutty" (having sex with many guys). Even though feminism has done a lot of good stuff for the modern woman, the stereotype of a "good" woman is still something like this. The next line in the chorus is about slut-shaming. Society has told girls, that if she has sex with who she wants and as many she wants, she's a slut. Society has made sex a bad thing. But why is that? Why does it make a difference if a girl has sex or none at all? On the other hand, if a guy has a lot of sex, he's totally cool. In that way, sex tells guys (or girls) how they should act and do to get accepted in society. The last line in the chorus refers to Marina's personal opinion upon this - she doesn't care that history has set the woman in a stereotype box, and she'll do whatever she wants if she feels for it, and she tries to tell other girls to do the same. If women were religiously recognized sexually We wouldn't have to feel the need To show our ass it's to feel free Been there done that got the t-shirt Sold my soul and yet the truth hurt Tired image of a star Acting naughtier than we really are The next pretty much tells about the same as above. The first two lines tells, againg, about how the past has set the woman in this stereotype, and made women a sex object. The next lines tells about what's expected for a woman on the sexual side. On one hand, she'll have to be controlled and calm and "proper", and on the other hand, she has to be this wild sex object ("Acting naughtier than we really are" She directly tells us, how tiring it is to have this pressed down on your shoulders. She did try to be the classic sex object, but she didn't feel any pleasure of it, and therefore she began questioning the whole thing.
My Interpretation
Cover art for Sex Yeah lyrics by Marina and the Diamonds

This song is partially about feminism as well as our Generation and how they are they are corrupted and given early hints about sex at a way to early age. Also Gender role and bias but I think more of the first two ideas than anything else. My break down intepretation of Sex Yeah.

Nothing is provocative anymore Even for kids No room for imagining 'Cause everyone's seen everything (I think this speaks for itself of how children in a regular movie find a sex scene or hinted sex scene appear somewhere and it's nothing for them anymore but if we would go back a couple years/decades this would be greatly frowned upon as well as with some 12-15 year olds already watching pornographic movies on their computers)

Question what the tv tells you Question what a pop star sells you (this part always left me a bit confused, I think what Marina meant is that don't think that it's a one time thing and then nothing happens, because there are consequences and don't think that the average popstar spends there whole day having sex and partying)

Question mom and question dad Question good and question bad (I think the 'question mom and question dad' part means to ask your parents about sex and not to rely on society to tell you about what sex is, This part 'Question good/bad' I am actually pretty stumped here but maybe she meant to question the good and bad influences.)

If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be) ((Here she means that history has pinned and degraded a woman and has forced them to be objectified by men and how we really aren't allowed to be ourselves, plus our pasts we weren't allowed to be superior of men today it's socially unacceptable but we are trying to change that)

If sex in our society (didn't tell a girl who she would be) 'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me (Sex in our society tells girls to be that perfect mom/housewife and to always be tidy and appealing to the males eyes, and girls are buying it and no I'm not saying that women should be looking homeless but they shouldn't be looking like street whores either, and feminist are trying to fight against the harsh history of women to make all beings equal)

If women were religiously Recognized sexually We wouldn't have to feel the need to show our ass, It's to feel free ( I think here she means if religion/or society were already recognizing the gender sexual they didn't need to show their a*s but I might get this wrong but I think they do this to feel free? I am pretty sure thats wrong so someone correct me on that.)

Been there, done that Got the t-shirt Sold my soul And yeah the truth hurts (I am also pretty stumped here but if I think it means that they done this and that and have sold their soul to society though the truth hurts, Correct me if I'm wrong)

Tired image of a star Acting naughtier than we really are (She's tired of the act stars pull of living the sexual life and always being naughtier than what they really are)

If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be) ((Already explained))

If sex in our society (didn't tell a guy who he should be) (A man never experiences the same objectification as women and if a women tries to stand up for herself and self worth she is instantly a bit*h)

'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me (Already explained)

All my life I've felt it deep inside of me (I think she means the feeling against the thoughts of society and how she knew it was wrong or... of something else which is totally unrelated.)

All this time was fighting for what I believe (She has always been fighting for her rights and for her beliefs and not going along with society)

All my life I've tried to hide what history has given me ( I think she means ignore what history has given her and all the objectification women receive already.)

If history could set you free (from who you were supposed to be) If sex in our society (didn't tell a guy who he should be) 'Cause all my life I've tried to fight what history has given me (Already explained)

Then I could be totally wrong I like to voice me thoughts every now and then.

Like other people said, it's about gender roles and bias. But to go into detail, I think she is singing about how people in our society are making it look like women should have to act more sexy than they are. How everyone thinks this way even though it's not true like everyone has seen everything.

love this song and marina and the diamonds.

Cover art for Sex Yeah lyrics by Marina and the Diamonds

I think this song is mostly directed to parents, children/teenagers, and society. I think it is about how sex is overly used in show business for money, and how it can harm young people.

My Interpretation
Cover art for Sex Yeah lyrics by Marina and the Diamonds

The part of this song that really gets me is ''question mom and question dad, question good and question bad''. And I honestly think this two lines in particular really apply to more than sex in the song. Questioning your parents and questioning what we believe of as good and bad is pretty good advice just generally.
