Idea of Happiness

In my opinion this song represents what happens in relations sometimes, a couple with different expectations. So while there is one person deeply attached to the other wanting to be happy together, the other person doesn’t want to care about that and just wants to have fun and be happy in a different way. What is an idea of happiness for a one is not for the other…This is the main line, and we can really see that in the video of the song. (The guy with a string despises his mate, and seems to be much happier while with his friends and the thoughts of another woman). The reference to that on the lyrics is the line: “With your idea of happiness and your heroes in your life”.

But the all song is a self-examination of a past relation by the singer, thinking of how time can have different meanings when appreciating different ways of happiness. Now the relation it’s over he finds himself “wasting” time thinking about it, when his motivation word was “We got so much time to think about yesterday”. (Being yesterday here the representation of the all relation, probably the discussions or the commitments of the relation, or whatever comes from that). The guy simply didn’t want to give much importance to his mate she was not part of the plans of happiness at the moment. Something like let’s appreciate life while young.(even if despising the love that someone has for us) So when on the relation there was a feeling of “we couple have time to be together let’s be happy in our different way. let’s not pay too much attention on that, because we got so much time, to think about yesterday” let’s think about today. But on the present, he realizes times is slipping and running out, closer and closer to his end and maybe the way he enjoyed past time could be different. There’s a certain feeling of loneliness and regret when remembering there was someone to be with. So by fate, he is now ironically “Just thinking on yesterday” When she said to him: Stop, you know you lift me up dancing (you make me happy) You know how to find me, you take me away With your idea of happiness and your heroes in your life (you don’t care about me and you pull me away not caring with “our happiness” but you know where I am if you want me) Now is something I want you, to tell you before you Walk away (she was predicting the end)

“I don't know what this happiness will bring but I'll never let you down All these thoughts will make you feel king so lay me down, down”

Finally this line shows what she wanted to say before the end/”you walk away”. And it’s like a sad goodbye because although she didn’t understand his ways of happiness she knew it didn’t include her, so, lay me down down (“you know you lift me up dancing”… )

This song inspires many emotions for me: nostalgia, sadness, happiness, love, bitterness, complacency, despair.

It's very upbeat but very sad. It stirs up conflict! I want to cry when listening to it. I can feel the power in the despair behind this song.

I think it's about a couple trying to hang on and cherish the last few moments of their relationship. They both know it's ending. The protagonist is reflecting/stuck on the past. His/her partner wants to express gratitude at everything he/she inspired in their relationship. They get each other. She wants him/her to hold on to that happiness. But the protagonist is stuck on yesterday.

I've been there (yesterday). It's a tough place to be. Hindsight is very unfriendly.
