I guess the dictionary said spread too thin means "To engage in so many activities that one can't perform any of them well" and the author just wants room to breath! Great tune!
I think it might have multiple different meanings (I have a very active mind and rarely think only one thing at once), but so far, the one that sounds like it fits the most is about a guy that, for whatever reason, feels like he works too much and needs, at the very least, a break, if not to just relax for the rest of his life. Which reminds me of Disney, as most things do.
Maybe I should specify which part of Disney it reminds me of. For those of you who haven't seen The Lion King 1 1/2, don't read the rest of this, it contains spoilers...the reason Timon left his meerkat colony was b/c he felt overworked and not loved enough. He felt overworked b/c he could not perform "traditional" work, such as digging tunnels and sentry duty. He just wanted a worry-free life, w/o all that responsibility and all those hyenas. He felt like he wasn't loved enough b/c everybody besides his mother was either ticked off at him or making fun...
