Caution Repetitive

I think it's about a man who's above average intelligence, he feels he should be treated like someone special, be famous, he could "go far" (metaphorically, aim for the top) but nobody seem to understand that. He thinks he's "something great", but society keeps reminding him that it's "nothing new", that he's not that special.

As he's frustrated, he tends to become violent, and despise other people : "you shoot them to the floor".

In parallel, he starts to be a bit famous on the net, but "You're a star amongst a few but we wonder who you are" highlights the strangeness of internet fame : you're famous but no one actually knows you, leaving you alone with your frustration and bitterness.

"I heard you got a car & you're gonna go far" -- idea of physical journey. “gonna go far” links to the idea of fame and success. the person the speakers is talking to has potential to be something great.

"You probably should get out but there's not much going on" -- they don’t leave their house much. they’re a recluse, segregating themselves from society. instead claiming that there’s no reason to integrate themselves into the real world as there is nothing for them out there.

"A man as smart as you could be set to be a star" -- the protagonist has significant potential for success but lacks the motivation to seek it. could also be taken sarcastically, saying the protagonist has no talents, is painfully average, and therefore serves no significant purpose.

"You're a star amongst a few but we wonder who you are" -- the protagonist has achieved significant success and fame in a group of people. this references youtube celebrity culture, where normal young adults are treated as celebrities when in reality they have contributed nothing significant to the world. therefore the vast majority of people (“we”) “wonder who you are”, meaning that while they have success on the internet they haven’t found that same relevance offline.

"You shoot them to the floor with a whistle & a laugh" -- “them” could be taken one of two ways. either referring to their fans who aren’t on the same level, or it could be taken to mean the majority of people who have no idea who these internet celebrities are. a whistle and a laugh are very nonchalant ways to brush something off as being insignificant.

"They'll never get your jokes 'cos you're smarter than they are" -- “they” are on a different level to the protagonist. this links to the heightened ego the protagonist likely has from their success. this implies that there will never be a true understanding between the two parties.

"You spend your time online being somewhat of a star" -- this again references youtube culture in a more direct manner. "somewhat" portrays how uninfluential the protagonist is the scheme of things. they have a very small impact upon the world and have achieved moderate success online.

"You're a star amongst a few and we wonder who you are" -- again referencing the huge difference between the youtube personalities and literal celebrities.

"People call you mean 'cos you tease them with the truth" -- “tease them with the truth” links back to the idea that the protagonist has a heightened ego/is on a different level to their fans. they become a character and have a separate private life which is only seen/hinted at briefly. their fans begin to assume that they are entitled to know the intimate details about the protagonist’s life.

"Twisted for a laugh by a wit as sharp as you" -- “truth / twisted” use of enjambment, implies that the “truth” seen by the fans has been changed to maintain an image. “laugh” implies that the protagonist doesn’t take the relationship between fan/star seriously & likes the heightened reactions of the fans. “wit as sharp as you” poking fun at the ego developed by the protagonist & how they view themselves as better than the fans.

"Wasting all your time playing farces with the few" -- wasting time joking and putting on a persona. instead of the protagonist trying to develop their personality they instead portray a character and exploit the situations they find themselves in in order to remain interesting, instead losing any integrity that they held onto.

"You could be something great" -- again acknowledging the significant potential the protagonist possesses but fails to act on.

"But something great is nothing new" -- this references the protagonists unwillingness to conform to something which is so normal. the protagonist instead wishes to be part of the “new” form of celebrity. it also implies that the protagonist could be much more than a character on the internet and could instead make an impact, but they instead have fallen into a trap of a routine. the line could be then seen as ironic as the protagonist thinks that straying from the norm (the formulaic videos & personalities) will have a negative impact and they won’t achieve the “greatest” i.e. success that they currently see.

the repetition of the lyrics throughout the also reiterates the concept of the formulaic personality and the unwillingness to stray from the norms perpetuate by this specific form of internet culture. it puts forward the idea that there is no real change between different internet celebrities, and once they have succumbed to this success formula they all blur into one concept of a person.
