About Sophie Lyrics
She's an unwelcome shutter on the worst of hair days,
and despite the bad moods, she won't go away.
She's as stubborn as winter and as kind as the sun,
and she won't freeze or burn anyone.
On most days she drives me home, out of her way,
and when I say "Drive safe" I mean it, today.
'Cause I'm a tough luck friend.
I reckon she'll stay with me til the end,
and it means more than I pretend.
Her car's like a sauna made mostly of smoke,
and it glides back to hers most late nights like a ghost,
and nothing is said unless it needs to be.
I'll watch a movie, she'll fall asleep.
She's one of those who when you're talking, you'll see:
She's really listening to someone like me.
Why would she listen to someone like me?
'Cause I'm a tough shit friend.
I reckon she'll stay with me 'til the end,
and it means more than I pretend.
And I know I'm awful, I can't even cry.
It's about time I told her, and looked in her eyes:
"You're my best friend, I'll love you 'til one of us dies.
You're my best friend, I'll love you 'til one of us dies.
You're my best friend, I'll love you 'til one of us dies."
and despite the bad moods, she won't go away.

Lovely.
"And despite the bad moods, she won't go away / She's as stubborn as winter and as kind as the sun"
Sounds like it's about a cold and distant guy who seems like an asshole on the outside, but his friend Sophie doesn't let that dissuade her from being his friend.
"I'll reckon she'll stay with me, til the end / And it means more than I pretend."
He acts like he doesn't appreciate her but deep down he really does. "It's about time I told her and looked in her eyes 'You're my best friend, I'll love you til one of us dies'"
This bit gets me: She's one of those who when you're talking, you'll see / She's really listening to someone like me / Why was she listening to someone like me?
;_;
the thing i love about keaton's music is that he writes it for himself. every thing in every one of his songs is about him. i reckon he wrote this for a friend. despite common belief it was for Soko the french singer, I really don't think this one is about her.
It's about time I told her, and looked in her eyes: "You're my best friend, I'll love you 'til one of us dies. You're my best friend, I'll love you 'til one of us dies. You're my best friend, I'll love you 'til one of us dies."
It took me awhile to notice this. When listening to this part of the song, the tune goes into a more romantic mood. But once he says "You're my best friend, I'll love you till one of us dies." It heads back to that melancholic mood. So to me it is as if he was going to tell her how much he loves her and has always loved her more as a friend and he want's to be more than friends but he can't.
So the song to me is about a guy who has always been deeply infatuated with a girl called Sophie and they have been friends for forever. He notices all this little things about her and her life that she doesn't even know. She doesn't seem to know that he cares for her. And when he gets the courage to tell her how he feels he just falls back to where he always was.
This song is really magnificent. Never fails to make me smile for the saddest reasons
I think that this song is about a guy that has a best friend of whom he appears unappreciative towards, but on the inside he is really in love with her.
It's plain to see that he's infatuated with "Sophie", though she doesn't know his true feelings. I had to do a video interpretation of this song for media, and I think it is implied that she dies before he gets to tell her he loves her.
In the lyric "When I say drive safe, I mean it today" I think that was kind of an insight as to how she will die; in a car accident.
@clairebaldwin9 I shared the same thought! Especially with the lyric "I can't even cry", to show that even in her death he has been unable to be emotional.
