Disarm (Smashing Pumpkins cover) Lyrics

Disarm you with a smile
And cut you like you want me to
Cut that little child
Inside of me and such a part of you
Ooh, the years burn

I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what i choose is my choice
What's a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you
My love
I send this smile over to you

Disarm you with a smile
And leave you like they left me here
To wither in denial
The bitterness of one who's left alone

Ooh, the years burn
Ooh, the years burn, burn, burn

I used to be a little boy
So old in my shoes
And what I choose is my voice
What's a boy supposed to do?
The killer in me is the killer in you
My love
I send this smile over to you

The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you
The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you
The killer in me is the killer in you
Send this smile over to you

Cover art for Disarm (Smashing Pumpkins cover) lyrics by Civil Wars, The

To me this is a song about a guy who has known a girl since childhood and they keep trying to date, but it never quite works out and they keep killing each other slowly with heartbreak.

"Disarm you with a smile And cut you like you want me to"

They're on the outs again and she has her defenses up so that he won't hurt her again, but then he smiles at her, and her heart breaks because all she want's to do is be with him. Therefore, his smile and being nice to her disarms her defenses and she doesn't mind because she really wants to let him in and love him, but it hurts more and more each time.

"Cut that little child Inside of me and such a part of you Ooh, the years burn"

They've known each other since childhood, they know each other's deepest, darkest secrets, and they also know each other's strengths and weaknesses. They also have caused each other to loose their innocence because they have hurt each other so many times. Because of this, they are both scared emotionally and have a hard time letting people in, and this just keeps getting worse as the years go by. "The years burn", meaning that when they look back on their relationship, all they can feel is anger and pain.

"I used to be a little boy So old in my shoes And what i choose is my choice What's a boy supposed to do? The killer in me is the killer in you My love I send this smile over to you"

Similar to before, the singer is saying that they have lost their innocence to the other person in this relationship and they have forced them to grow up and think like an adult. "And what I choose is my choice" means that he knows he is choosing to hurt the woman he loves by getting back together with her, but he does it anyway because he can and he is selfish and wants her. This causes conflict with in him between his morals and what he wants, therefore, "what's a boy supposed to do?" This also shows that he has been doing this since they were children and knows that he has been. But they both hurt each other, therefore "The killer in me is the killer in you" because they retaliate when they are hurt and it becomes this vicious cycle. Yet they "send this smile over to you" trying to make the other believe that they don't care and the other's actions don't affect them when they do.

"Disarm you with a smile And leave you like they left me here To wither in denial The bitterness of one who's left alone

Ooh, the years burn Ooh, the years burn, burn, burn"

Similar to before, they are in this vicious cycle of abuse and retaliation, but they don't want to believe that they are in an abusive relationship, so they "wither in denial, the bitterness of one who's left alone"

Basically I think this song can be interpreted to be about two people who have loved each other since childhood, but abuse each other at the same time. they come into eachother's lives when they are at their lowest, build them back up again, and then leave the other there to fall, and they fall harder than before and they are left alone to pick up the pieces. Overall, this song breaks my heart, because I have been in this exact type of relationship and I know how hard it is to get out of it.
