Q&A
In Absentia Lyrics
there was once a boy
with knives stuck in his voice
all he wanted, all he wanted was a little affection
until one day he caved
into his mother's taste
all she wanted, all she wanted was to spread her infection
he spins her spindle weaving fuse
burning fumes of lucid youth to mend
her broken flesh
they've stolen all my love
buried in absentia rose
can you hear my vitreous heart
breaking in absentia rose?
smokestack burning
Eidolon turning
I won't ever let you go
they've stolen all my love
yes, they've stolen all my love
he brings her the bait
she makes him her pet
does he want some, does he want a little insurrection?
with oneiric gaze, in somatic days
ocular incision, tell me I'm the reason
I just gotta get out of here
he spins her spindle weaving fuse
burning fumes of lucid youth to mend
her useless flesh
they've stolen all my love
buried in absentia rose
can you hear my vitreous heart
breaking in absentia rose?
smokestack burning
Eidolon turning
I won't ever let you go
they've stolen all my love
yes they've stolen all my love
taken by the night
divagate remembrance
check the puzzle, does it fit?
I am alpha and omega
and on the seventh day I rise
past the pangs of my resistance
when the son gives up his throne
what becomes of this theft?
Dasehra, make these shackles go away
Dasehra, won't you help me stand my ground if I should fall?
Dasehra, as long as I am injured
Dasehra, as long as I remember
with knives stuck in his voice
all he wanted, all he wanted was a little affection
into his mother's taste
all she wanted, all she wanted was to spread her infection
burning fumes of lucid youth to mend
her broken flesh

OMG the last two minutes are epic...
best tune on the album. the ending is audio chocolate.
Agreed, best song on the album. Last two minutes or so are as good as anything else they have recorded.
No one has thoughts about what it all means? Seriously, it epic like many others, like Cassandra Gemini. Its about a boys emotionality being ruined in a nightmarish childhood and evil woman, his mother. He is scarred beyond repair into adulthood where Dasehra is his only solace as long as he is injured, as long as he remembers, till absentia. They've stolen his love because he means to say it never existed (Buried In Absentia) Was Absent, he partially loved the bitch that tormented him that's why it was so hard. Ive never heard Cedric comment on this but he did say the The Whip Hand is about abuse and that the album is about a dysfunctional family (home life was a ZOO) Apparently, Dasehra is a Hindu festival symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, celebrated for ten days in October. I fucking love Mars Volta, too bad Omar gave it up so people can't sing over his guitar....lol...j/k Im thankful for the several albums we got, especially this one to seal it.

Even without knowing that Cedric had an abusive childhood, if you've had to live with a Narcissistic mother, you can recognize what he is attempting to articulate through the lyrics.

It burns you out and leaves you incapable of trusting people, yet on a deeper level, once you gain understanding, you realize that you can't blame the individual entirely for it. As he states in the lyrics, It's an infection. As a result, feelings of anger, betrayal and loss become redirected and channeled at the aspects of society that pass on and reinforce narcissism.

Thus the eerie declarations of...
Thus the eerie declarations of insurrection and:
"Check the puzzle, does it fit"
Empowered in recognition of his wounds. He looks at the aspects of social discord and entrenched, normalized abuse and recognizes what caused his mother's behavior.
"I am alpha and omega"
A declaration of personal power:
And on the seventh day I rise Past the pangs of my resistance
When the son gives up his throne What becomes of this theft
He has sworn to oppose that which wounds and creates the narcissistic void and stole from him the life he could have had. Culminating with a prayerful invocation of Dasehra. As long as he is injured, as long as he remembers the pain, good must triumph over evil.

@Nuptunutation Amazingly well said. Loved the part where you (sort of) explained the meaning of Dasehra. This song really captures what I love about The Mars Volta. It's so chaotic, but the transitions are so very well done. I practically know no one else in my personal surroundings that know The Mars Volta, but boy would I love to share the experience I get of this music with my loved ones!

@Nuptunutation And what did you mean with the Alpha and Omega part? Not a native English speaker ;). I always thought that in some situations he is the Alpha, a.k.a. the leader, the important person (or something like that), and in other situations he is the omega, a.k.a. the loner (not really, but I hope you get the point), the shy one. Love to hear your thoughts =D

Totally was gonna make the exact same comment on the last two minutes. Mindblowing.
Exactly. The Last two minutes I get my mind blown every time.
Sounds "Smiths" inspired.
