It Gets Better Lyrics
What are we doing, oh my god
What are we doing, oh my god
This is really happening
You never looked so bored
Can you feel my fingernails?
They've never been so short
It's hard to lay a golden egg with everyone around
It's hard to stay inside my head when words keep pouring out
Like star light crashing through the room, we'll lose our feathers
Yes, I know it hurts at first but it gets better
It gets better, it gets better
It gets better, it gets better
We'll get better
It gets better, it gets better
It gets better, it gets better
We'll get better
I can taste your summer sweat
It's never been so warm
So can we kick the covers off?
They're always on
It's never been so warm
It's hard to keep a straight face when I just want to smile
If you could see the look that's in your eyes
Like star light crashing through the room, we'll lose our feathers
Yes, I know it hurts at first but it gets better
It gets better, it gets better
It gets better, it gets better
We'll get better
It gets better, it gets better
It gets better, it gets better
We'll get better
There's a violet sky
Some snow on the ground
Not quite enough cigarettes
To calm me down
What are we doing, oh my god
What are we doing, oh my god
It gets better, it gets better
It gets better, it gets better
We'll get better
It gets better, it gets better
It gets better, it gets better
We'll get better
(This is really happening)
It gets better, it gets better
It gets better, it gets better

Unless there's some underlying meaning that I'm not seeing, this song is clearly about having sex.
People are bad at it at first, and "it gets better, we'll get better."
This song is about having sex for the first time. That's about it.
To me this song sounds like it's about two people having sex for the first time. Neither are too comfortable, but whoever the songs point of view is from seems to be having most trouble in the situation.
"That song is just about losing your virginity." -Nate Ruess about this song

I would never have interpreted it as someone losing their virginity. To me it sounds like what it says, getting better, healing from something, seeing new perspectives. I base this on the line
"Like starlight, crashing through the room, we'll loose our feathers."
It reminds me of Swan lake. Odette was transformed into a swan by a bad spell but at nights she can become a human for a few hours. So in this context "Loose our feathers" wouldn't mean not being able to fly anymore but actually becoming yourself again. Just for a short period; so a step forwards and getting better but still not having reached your aim.
"I can taste your summer sweat It's never been so warm So can we kick the covers off? They're always on It's never been so warm"
I know how that sounds but couldn't it be possible that he means that they cover, hide, but he wants to get rid of the covers because he thinks they don't need them anymore ("I can taste your summer sweat, it's never been so warm") and also the covers are constraining them. He thinks they are ready to do the next step, because they already get better.
I know, Nate said it is about losing virginity but 1. I am not so sure if he was serious about that and 2. this is how I'd like to see it. As a motivational song that things will get better soon.
I’ve always been curious about the radio bit in the middle. I sounds like maybe a tv or radio that was left on. From what I can hear is sound like “In a nation with no values other than your own values are rubbish” and then “Jesus, America” then sounds like a different person maybe a person in the song says “Oh my God”. I always took the lgbt perspective on this song. In equal parts about sex and the general idea of sexual orientation and coming out. For myself it’s kind of a mantra “it gets better”. Anyway, that radio bit plays into that idea for me in that it seems like a homophobic speech about “traditional values” and the “oh my god” is the person in the song saying that as they turn off the TV or radio. Just a thought
I think it's about his feelings for a girl. He wants to like her but isn't sure. She seems uninterested in him and he can't get in touch with her. Thus the part about her being bored and his fingernails being short.
They move on and now like each other and have sex. Thus "summer sweat".

I think the short fingernails comment could also be referring to biting his nails out of nervousness/anxiety
