The Road Lyrics
I hold my shoulder tight against the cold that rolls down the road tonight
Though I’ve left the fold, my feet will find a hold
Now I cannot stop
I will not turn around on the road tonight
Though I’ve left your side,
Still I will find, find a way
The holy garment threads apart, the cloth of white is stained
The floor has bowed beneath the weight
The beams now bend and break
No longer can I call a home, the place I’ve known so well
But what may come upon the road, right now I cannot tell
Though I’ve left the fold, my feet will find a hold
I will not turn around on the road tonight
Though I’ve left your side,
Still I will find, find a way
The floor has bowed beneath the weight
The beams now bend and break
No longer can I call a home, the place I’ve known so well
But what may come upon the road, right now I cannot tell

I think the song is mainly about a man who is simply growing old. He's leaving his home and his family. The road symbolizes this cold, dark, and mysterious path. It's just his path to find his own life.
"I hold my shoulder tight against the cold that rolls down the road tonight. Though I've left the fold, my feet will find a hold." Coldness might mean that he is lonely as he continues on with his life. However, he is confident and knows he'll find support.
"Though I've left your side, Still I will find a way." He left his loved ones, but he plans to find his own life along the road.
"The Holy garment threads apart, the cloth of white is stained. The floor has bowed beneath the feet, The beams now bend and break." The place he called home is falling apart, and that is part of the reason why he leaves.
"But what may come upon the road, right now I cannot tell." He doesn't know what lies ahead. Yet he still treks on.
Love this song. One of my favorites.
In interviews BJA has said that this and 'Sprout' are the most autobiographical of the songs on this album.... and from what else he has said about his upbringing and 'changing worldview' I think this is effectively about becoming agnostic but being happy with that choice "Though I’ve left the fold, my feet will find a hold" "No longer can I call a home, the place I’ve known so well"
