I think it's just, "I laid up wide awake." (Or maybe he does sing "quite" instead of "wide"?)

That last line gets me so bad...

Great song. I read it as this being a narrative of his worst nightmare.

He loses his hand in a fireworks accident then takes his life.

What's really cool is the second half of the song is like he's narrating as if he's dead and his ghost is seeing what's going on.

All his girlfriends coming into the funeral home while he is lying there.. he can't do anything.. he just watches along as a confused, motionless ghost. it's truly a mess.
