Arnold Layne Lyrics

Arnold Layne had a strange hobby
Collecting clouds
Moonshine washing line
They suit him fine
On the wall hung a tall mirror
Distorted view, see through baby blue
Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know
Why can't you see?
Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne

Now he's caught, a nasty sort of person
They gave him time
Doors bang, chain gang, he hates it
Oh, Arnold Layne
It's not the same, takes two to know
Two to know, two to know
Why can't you see?
Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne, Arnold Layne

Don't do it again

Cover art for Arnold Layne lyrics by Syd Barrett

'It takes two to know, two to know.... why can't you see?' This is poignant. In one of the two videos made for Arnold Layne Syd shouts the last line and points at the camera. What he conveys is that if you call someone a pervert, chances are you are one yourself. It's as if he says: look at yourself first, before pointing a finger.

I think where Syd sings 'A nasty sort of person' it's not Syd's opinion; it's society's.
