Broken Girl Lyrics

Look what he's done to you
It isn't fair
Your light was bright and new
But he didn't care
He took the heart of a little girl
And made it grow up too fast

Now words like innocence
Don't mean a thing
You hear the music play
But you can't sing
Those pictures in your mind
Keep you locked up inside your past

This is a song for the broken girl
The one pushed aside by the cold, cold world
You are
Hear me when I say
You're not the worthless they made you feel
There is a Love they can never steal away
And you don't have to stay the broken girl

Those damaged goods you see
In your reflection
Love sees them differently
Love sees perfection
A beautiful display
Of healing on the way tonight
Tonight

Look what he's done to you
It isn't fair
Your light was bright and new
But he didn't care
He took the heart of a little girl
And made it grow up too fast

Now words like innocence
Don't mean a thing
You hear the music play
But you can't sing
Those pictures in your mind
Keep you locked up inside your past

This is a song for the broken girl
The one pushed aside by the cold, cold world
You are
Hear me when I say
You're not the worthless they made you feel
There is a Love they can never steal away
And you don't have to stay the broken girl, girl
You don't have to stay the broken girl, girl

Let your tears touch the ground
Lay all your shattered pieces down
And be amazed by how Grace can take a broken girl
And put her back together again

This is a song for the broken girl
The one pushed aside by the cold, cold world
You are
Hear me when I say
You're not the worthless they made you feel
There is a Love they can never steal away
You don't have to stay the broken girl, girl
You don't have to stay the broken girl, girl
You don't have to stay the broken girl

Cover art for Broken Girl lyrics by Matthew West

I know that this was technically written about girls who were molested at a young age, but I've always interpreted it as being about bullying and depression, because that's how I can relate to it.

'Look what he's done to you, it isn't fair! You're light was bright and new, but he didn't care! He took the heart of a little girl, and made it grow up too fast.'

To me, that's saying that people destroyed a young girl's innocence and childhood, teasing her, treating her like an outcast, bullying her, making her grow up much quicker and became much more solemn and sad and reserved than she should be for her age.

'Now words like innocence, don't mean a thing. You hear the music play, but you can't sing. The pictures in your mind keep you locked up inside your past.'

She has become so withdrawn and solemn she can't really fit in she doesn't feel like she can join in with everyone else. She expects to be pushed out and rejected by others so she does it too herself, and can't even try because she's so scared and hurt. She is depressed and her depression makes it hard for her to even try to participate.

'This is a song for the broken girl. the one pushed aside by the cold cold world."

This is referring to how she was bullied for being different or considered not good enough by the people in her little world.

'You're not the worthless they made you feel'

This is the singer telling her she isn't worthless, she isn't what they called her.

The rest of the chorus is the singer saying how she can recover, how this isn't the end and she will find someone who will love her no matter what, and she can get better.

'Those damaged goods you see in you're reflection, love sees them differently, love sees perfection. A beautiful display of healing on the way tonight.'

The people that care about her, those that are worth her time would think of every little perceived flaw, every quirk or trait that makes her different makes her perfect.

'Let the tears hit the ground, lay all your shattered pieces down. And be amazed by how grace can take a broken girl, and put her back together again.'

This is saying how it's ok to be a bit broken or a lot broken and that she doesn't have to hold herself together alone.

So yeah, that's how I have always interpreted this song. Again, I know it's about abuse and stuff technically but I relate to it by thinking of it like this.

I really like this interpretation! I think that a really good song is one that can be interpreted many ways to fit many scenarios, even if it was written with one particular one in mind.
