Christmas Time Is Here Lyrics
Based solely on the lyricism, this song is fairly simple: it is a very optimistic, innocent, and almost naive perspective of the holidays.
However, once paired with Guaraldi's jazzy, downtempo piano playing, as well as the content of the Christmas special, the song takes a very different meaning. This song represents the cynicism that Charlie Brown's character feels throughout the story; whilst he is repeatedly searching for a truer, deeper meaning to Christmas, all of his peers seem only to be focused on attaining material possessions, and don't seem to care about each other that much.
I think that everybody enjoys the holidays, at least a little but. However, I also think that everybody can't help but feel a little cynical, a little doubtful, or even a little depressed at the thought of it. Society is constantly pressured to indulge in the physical, monetary, materialistic intoxicants of our world in order to be considered in the Christmas spirit, when in reality, the greatest gift one can ever give is love and acceptance to their fellow man. I would certainly hope that kind of behavior isn't confined to just one day in December.
