Of Prometheus and the Crucifix Lyrics

I am the Promethean
Tragic figure in this dream
Dream known as life
I bring spark into the lives
Take the molded, show them fire
Fire's the spark in their eyes

My flesh is ripped at daily
It's the cross I bear

[Chorus]
I feel it tear out my insides
A pain so heavy I could collapse
I feel it just may kill me
I must brave through this storm

I am made exemplary
Lashed up by the public scene
For bearing my heart, my soul's on fire
I pull my ribs open now
Bleed my heart upon the grounds
Drink of the blood, take me in

My flesh is ripped at daily
It's the cross I bear

[Chorus]

Chain me down, nail me up
It feels so cold on my skin
Flesh cut deep from their claws
Chew my organs out
Salivating with hate
Crown of thorns, deathly boards; won't
Make me cease to be
You've turned this scapegoat into
The lion that will devour you whole

[Repeat: x2]
My flesh is ripped at daily
It's the cross I bear

[Chorus: x2]

Prometheus was a Greek Titan who stole fire from Zeus and gave it to humans.

In punishment for this he was chained to a cliff side where his Liver was eaten daily by Eagles/Vultures but would regenerate at night time due to his imortality.

So yeah, thats what the origin is....meaning however I have no idea....Maybe fighting through pain that you are suffering because something good may come of it in the end??

It's comparing Prometheus to Jesus and how people are often punished for trying to bring enlightenment to the world

I agree with both robert grim reaper and Charleh, this song is about great martyrs, jesus and prometheus both did great things and were punished drasticaly for it. theGrynch is wrong, this song IS about jesus, the lyrics

A pain so heavy i could collapse

i must brave through this storm are about jesus collapsing under the weight of the cross and the strom is a metaphor for the troubles the Jewish leders put him through..also

I am made Exemplary Lashed up by the public scene For bearing my heart, my soul's on fire I pull my ribs open now Bleed my heart...

the song is open for interpretation, but i honestly doubt its about jesus or anything religion related. matt heafy is an avid atheist so i really doubt he'd write or even care about something like that.

@triviumfan1991 wtf are you talking about lmao. matt has never claimed to be an atheist. based on all of the symbolic lyrics in trivium lyrics, him being Christian is much more likely. this song is 100% about Jesus and Prometheus, it's clear as day reading through it. denying it is just dumb and senseless. maybe next time you should source your claims instead of pulling them out of your ass? poser

I think this is about being a martyr, doing something you think is right and facing the consequences - but braving them out and dealing with them like a hardcore sonbitch that can take getting his liver ripped out every night and be ready for it the next day!

And damn, this song is GOOD, the solo melts faces and the chorus riffs are awesome - I love the super high pitched Trivium harmonies in their solos, like on The Deceieved on Ascendancy.

Classic!

I think its all about enduring what is wrought. If you believe something should be done, then do it but be prepared for the consequences that could come with it.

It looks like it is all about just enduring the things in life you go through because of the things you have done. Life goes on.

the first hard in the chorus should be heavy...

yah all of them are heavy, not hard

I don't know why posted Hard. I think I fucked up the first time on the chores and then just copied and pasted the rest of them without noticing.

There are so many people swearing that the song isn't about Jesus, it's bordering on stupidity.

Let me make my case:

 1. The name of the song is "Of Prometheus and the Crucifix." This can be directly translated to "About Prometheus and Jesus on the Cross." Google "Crucifix" if you have any doubts, here.

 2. The lyrics include phrases like "It's the cross I bear," "Crown of Thorns, deathly boards," "Lion that will devour you whole," "Drink of the blood, take me in," etc. All of these are references to verses in the Bible. Jesus is frequently referred as "The Lion of Judah" and in the Book of Revelations he destroys all of humanity (not to mention Mathew 10).

 3. Many of the people claiming it's not about Jesus often say that the lead singer is atheist. That's completely moot. Firstly, because American atheists must constantly discuss and reference religion and most of us were religious at some point in our lives, anyway. Secondly, because this song (and this album as a whole) are references to mythology. A Christian would never compare Jesus to Prometheus, but an atheist just might!

So let's be clear, the song is about Jesus and Prometheus. Any resemblance to real life situations are resemblances that can also be drawn to the stories of either Jesus or Prometheus (I'm looking at you Chrisguitar).

Im pretty sure this song is about how Trivium are very popular for a metal band and are viciously hated by a large part of the metal community for this popularity. He is using the story of Prometheus giving the humans the gift of fire and recieving years of suffering from Zeus because of it as a metaphor for him giving the world his music, getting very popular and yet recieving constant hatred from large members of the 'old guard'.

'I am the Promethean Tragic Figure in this dream Dream known as life'

His dream was for the band to take off and become popular, the dream is now 'life', it came true. He is a 'tragic figure' though because with the accomplishment of this dream came the hatred.

'I bring spark into the lives Take the molded show them fire Fire's the spark in their eyes'

He give people his music, they enjoy it, it brings 'spark' into their lives.

'My Flesh is Ripped at daily It's the cross I bear

I feel it tear out my insides A pain so heavy I could collapse I feel it just may kill me I must brave through this storm'

Go onto blabbermouth, youtube or just google 'Matt Heafy' and see the huuuuuuge amount of really very vicious hatred many metalheads have for him. He released the bands first album when he was 16, it took off pretty majorly when he was still only 19 and that was when all the hatred started ('flesh cut deep from their claws, chew my organs out, salivating with hate'), at a young age like that seeing all that shit about yourself suddenly errupt all over the place has gotta hit you pretty hard ...in some earlier interviews he mentions blabbermouth quite a bit (and they have already dedicated two songs to attacks on their haters, To The Rats and Kirisute Gomen) so clearly this had quite a big effect on him. He says despite this though he will try and 'brave through this storm', ie continue to write music people enjoy.

At the end of the song he states that their insults will not make him stop and they have just made him a stronger person with more fire to write even better music.

'Crown of thorns, deathly boards; won't make me cease to be You've turned this scapegoat into The lion that will devour you whole'

It is most definately NOT about Jesus, I spoke to Matt before a show a few years ago, the dude is an atheist.

i agree with you. that was a great breakdown of the song. =]

Well first of all you are the most correct person here and secondly i'm pretty sure he was 17.

You're wrong that it's not about Jesus.

"Crucifix," "It's the cross I bear," "Crown of Thorns, deathly boards," "Lion that will devour you whole," "Drink of the blood, take me in," etc.

There are many references to Jesus. The fact that you can ignore them is pretty impressive.

As an atheist and former Christian, I talk about Jesus constantly. So I don't think him being an atheist precludes him from talking or singing about Jesus.

First comment any ways Of Prometheus and the Crucifix references the daily torment of Prometheus and alludes to crucifixion of Jesus Christ, serving as a metaphor for enduring torment by the public for daring to contribute something new to society

this is my interpretation of the song
