Every Time I Think of You Lyrics
Everytime I think of you
It always turns out good
Everytime I've held you
I thought you understood
People say a love like ours
Will surely pass
But I know a love like ours
Will last and last
But maybe I was wrong, not knowing how our love should go
(How our love, how our love should go?)
But I wasn't wrong in knowing, how our love would grow
(How our love, how our love would grow?)
And everytime I think of you
(Everytime)
Everytime I think of you
(Every single time)
It always turns out good
Seasons come and seasons go
But our love will never die
Let me hold you darlin'
So you won't cry
'Cause people say that our love affair
Will never last
But we know a love like ours
Will never pass
But maybe I was wrong, not knowing how our love should go
(How our love, how our love should go?)
But I wasn't wrong in knowing, how our love would grow
(How our love, how our love would grow?)
And everytime I think of you

no comments? Really? John Waite had an excellent voice, a sweet little 70's song that takes me back to being a child and listening to AM radio. :) A song about finding the one, and everyone doubting that you as a couple won't make it. And you do in spite of it all.
I also think this is about young love and trying to stay together through a lot of storms to weather - kind of like the feeling in the Bon Jovi song "Living on a Prayer." Most teen/youth relationships don't last into adulthood/ marriage/ children/ grandchildren/ old age, but there is something special and bittersweet in the hope that love, in the "springtime" of life, will last forever. ???? It's even sweet and sad to remember in restropect - those young relationships and promises from once upon a time.
The idea that love can also be a healing force to the doubting & jaded heart is in the lyrics. My take on it, although it may sound corny and overly romantic, is this: I see it as a guy comforting his insecure gf ???? by telling her he assumed she understood his love & commitment to her & the relationship by saying "I thought you understood" (my love & commitment) when he held her. Words were not needed to express what he was feeling in his embrace. He is confident the love would last & grow - "but I wasn't wrong not knowing how our love would grow." This is coming from one stalwart soul - doesn't everyone long for this type of connection & commitment? Also the comfort expressed by him saying "let me hold you darling, so you don't cry" speaks to the healing potential a solid relationship can offer to the person who has experienced insecure & unstable relationships thus far in life - which seems to be one message in the lyrics.
I have always loved this song. John Waite has a perfect pitch voice for it - and it's not only the pitch it's the soul he projects - straight on! The piano intro has a clean & crisp reverberation. The orchestration contrasted with the heavier rock chorus is rich and even somewhat progressive - it's not a boring repetitive song IMO. The guitar solo is heartfelt as well as the female vocal parts - so polished. I'm glad this austere and positive song is out there to remind me of the hope there is in love. Love is the answer.
