I think this song is about a person's desire to find truth. It starts out with the narrator trying everything to find truth and came to the conclusion that reality is not black and white as many religions claim. He states that humanity is standing on the edge of truth trying to make sense of it, but unfortunately leads to many people becoming afraid and turning to hatred. This ultimately leaves humanity empty handed. Throughout human history, civilizations have accrued knowledge that was subsequently lost due to war, catastrophe, etc. The narrator mentions militarization of societies and the subsequent loss of civilization and knowledge. He finds this frustrating and states that he is open to both eastern and western philosophy and wishes people would stop fighting over differences and focus on increasing the understanding of truth. It portrays truth and knowledge as a heavenly afterlife, not unlike Gnostic Christianity.
