Mountain Jan Lyrics
(Hofstede/Kloet/Stips - Hofstede)
We are proud of Jan
We are proud of Jan
We named a mountain after you somewhere in Antarctica
Unclimable, no different from the nameless others
He spent a number of years at this project
And now he knows how an electron behaves
Hom hom
The big man falls asleep
Hom hom
The mountain falls asleep
We are proud of Jan
We are proud of Jan
We named a mountain after you somewhere in Antarctica
Unclimable, no different from the nameless others
He spent a number of years at this project
And now he knows how an electron behaves
Hom hom
The big man falls asleep
Hom hom
The mountain falls asleep

In my opinion, I think the meaning of the lyrics in the song Mountain Jan by The Nits is about the Public's reaction (pride) and appointment of awards in response to a person's accomplishments...and how trivial Public pride and those awards really are. Proud of Jan for his accomplishments in physics and appointment of pride and naming a remove and unremarkable mountain after him and how, in the end, the mountain and Jan both fall asleep (forgotten)...changed in no way from having received those accolades of that ultimately inconsequential/meaningless award or the Public pride.
correction (typo) Meant to type: Proud of Jan for his accomplishments in physics and appointment of pride and naming a "REMOTE" and unremarkable mountain after him... (to what avail? What do these 'awards' really mean? Nothing.) Pride and accolade...both empty and inconsequential.the awards and the pride of the Public, while acknowledging a person's accomplishments; Public PRIDE and AWARDS, in themselves, are accomplishing nothing of importance. The BIG MAN falls asleep could refer not to Jan himself but to the inflated ego.
