D.J. Lyrics
I'm home, lost my job, and incurably I'll
You think this is easy, realism
I've got a girl out there, I suppose
I think she's dancing
Feel like Dan Dare lies down
I think she's dancing, what do I know?
I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can't turn around no, can't turn around, no, oh, ooh
I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can't turn around no, can't turn around, no, oh no
I am a D.J., I am what I play
I got believers
Believing me, oh
One more, weekend, of lights and evening faces
Fast food, living nostalgia
Humble pie or bitter fruit
I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can't turn around no, can't turn around no, ooh
I am a D.J., I am what I say
Can't turn around no, can't turn around, ooh
I am a D.J., I am what I play
I've got believers
Believing me
I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can turn around no, can't turn around
I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can turn around no, can't turn around
I am a D.J., I am what I play
Can turn around no
Time flies when you're having fun
Break his heart, break her heart
He used to be my boss and now he is a puppet dancer
I am a D.J., and I've got believers
I've got believers
I've got believers
I've got believers in me
I've got believers
I am a D.J., I am what I play
I am a D.J.

Actually I read in a book once that this song is called DJ not only because of DJ's but also from his initials, so yes. David Jones.
nah it's just about how all night long you play music for other people, and people judge you/know you solely based on which music you pick. it's almost like your music replaces your personality. you are what you play.
i'm a DJ, by the way.
There's a lot to say. First, Bowie comes home unemployed and believes that there's a girl out there for him. He doesn't believe that being a DJ is a job; he believes that he has a leader-ish type of role in this. "I am A DJ, I am what I say. I've got believers, believing in me." See what I mean?
I think that maybe David Bowie is making fun of himself, and about how ridiculous he thinks that sometimes his fans thinks that he is some kind of God, or something like that.
Also the lines of ''Time flies when you're having fun/Break his heart, break her heart.''
I think in this song the D.J. is a metaphor for David Bowie (David Jones) himself. He is what he plays; in the D.J.'s case 'powerofdenial' has the right explanation, and for Bowie: he constantly changed his style, music and persona. For the fans he is what he plays.
Does this song possibly have to do with DJ meaning David Jones, which was his original name?

I really love the distorted sound to this song. I sort of thought of it as the world through the eyes of a crazy dee-jay. A very fractured view.
I always thought of the lines "I've got a girl out there, I suppose/I think she's dancing" as meaning that he has a girl and he thinks she's out there cheating on him.
Also, in the first line it's "lost my job", not "love".
