What Do the Lonely Do at Christmas Lyrics
'Tis the season to be jolly
But how can I be when I have nobody
The yuletide carol doesn't make it better
Knowing that we won't be together
A silent night, I know it's gonna be
Joy to the world but it's gonna be sad for me
What do the lonely do at Christmas
Oh, what do the lonely do at Christmas time
The children can play with their new toys
While their little hearts burst open with joy
And lovers can kiss beneath the mistletoes
The choirs can sing those glorious songs of old
But what is left, oh, for me to do
Now that it's Christmas and I don't have you
What do the lonely do at Christmas
Oh, what do the lonely do at Christmas time
Oh, what do the lonely do at Christmas'
What do the lonely do at Christmas'
Oh, what do they do, what do they do at Christmas
Oh, what do they do, what do they do at Christmas
Oh, what do the lonely do at Christmas'
What do the lonely do at Christmas'
Oh, what do they do, what do they do at Christmas
But how can I be when I have nobody
The yuletide carol doesn't make it better
Knowing that we won't be together
Joy to the world but it's gonna be sad for me
Oh, what do the lonely do at Christmas time
While their little hearts burst open with joy
And lovers can kiss beneath the mistletoes
The choirs can sing those glorious songs of old
Now that it's Christmas and I don't have you
Oh, what do the lonely do at Christmas time
What do the lonely do at Christmas'
Oh, what do they do, what do they do at Christmas
Oh, what do they do, what do they do at Christmas
What do the lonely do at Christmas'
Oh, what do they do, what do they do at Christmas

The song does ask the right question: what do the lonely do at Christmas? Even though I spend Christmastime with my family, who I love, I absolutely hate to see my cohabiting and/or married cousins because beneath the mistletoe, they can get that kiss in - whether for fun to oblige the mistletoe's "honor", if you will, or in deep-seated passion. I sit there at the table and just feel like, "Damn...we're less than ten years apart and they have someone to hold them at night without question and they have a love that allows them to come in the bathroom while their respective husband or wife is taking a bath or shower to either one, use the bathroom or two, join them. The Yuletide banter and caroling make it even worse for me because it reminds me that we're less than a week from ending this particular year and then we all start with something new…but they'll get to start with someone already with them. I have to start alone again and try my hardest to find someone to make my heart "burst open with joy" so I can parade them around and make it known, "Yeah, he's all mine - can you believe it?" Ugh...just thinking about it while commenting on this selection from the other 1978 sister R&B girl group makes me tear up a bit. But, rest assured, the moment that I finally find him, I will review the song with my update!
