Satan, you know where I lie
Gently I go into that good night
All our lives get complicated
Search for pleasures overrated
Never armed our souls
For what the future would hold
When we were innocent
Angels, lend me your might
Forfeit all my lives to get just one right
All those colors long since faded
All our smiles all confiscated
Never were we told
We'd be bought and sold
When we were innocent
This prayer is for me tonight
This far down that line and still ain't got it right
And while confessions not yet stated
Our next sin is contemplated
Never did we know
What the future would hold
Or that we'd be bought and sold
We were innocent
Gently I go into that good night
All our lives get complicated
Search for pleasures overrated
Never armed our souls
For what the future would hold
When we were innocent
Forfeit all my lives to get just one right
All those colors long since faded
All our smiles all confiscated
Never were we told
We'd be bought and sold
When we were innocent
This far down that line and still ain't got it right
And while confessions not yet stated
Our next sin is contemplated
Never did we know
What the future would hold
Or that we'd be bought and sold
We were innocent

I think it's about life in general, how we start out innocent, not really worrying about the future, just having fun. Later we realize what life is all about and we realize the mistakes we made and we try to better ourselves before it's too late. But yet we keep making the same mistakes over and over again or maybe we try to improve but it's not as easy as we want it to be. ("and while confession's not yet stated, our next sin is contemplated") it could also have to do with spirituality and trying to be a better purer soul.
Eventually after experiencing all of this we reflect on simpler times in our life when we were, well, innocent and were just enjoying life because we didn't have all the hang-ups we have now because we just didn't know any better and just longing for that state of mind again. To quote another awesome band (Shinedown): "Innocence and ignorance, they both go hand in hand."
This song is very deep and it's my favorite on the album. I love to perform it on my acoustic along with "Bad Day" and sometime soon hope to learn the true electric version.
Props to Carl Bell for writing such a great song.
