Box of Spiders Lyrics
Gran Gran keeps a box of spiders.
She says they're on me when I sleep.
Waiting in the out-house for me.
Underneath the seat.
My great-grandmothers bout ninety-seven
And she is sure when she gets to heaven,
Old St. Peter's gonna throw his arms around her and say
'I've waited so long for us to meet'.
She put the General in a box
And buried him behind the Stoney Point Church of Christ,
When I was three.
(And she says) "When the lord comes to take me,
I'll die with a smile on, cause He's taking all my pains and fears."
She said The Generals last words were
"It's hotter than hell in here".
Gran Gran keeps a box of spiders,
Or so she told me as a child,
And I would hold it in for hours.
Too mean to die. Too mean to die. Too mean.

Saw the Truckers in PHX a few weeks ago, Patterson said this song was written for his great grandmother. She was married to his great grandfather who was named "The General." The general was a gambler and a drunk, and his grandmother put up with his shit her whole life. Later in her life, she started attending funerals and loudly mourning for the dead -- who she didn't know -- and people would come up and hug her and she loved it. Anyway, after years of putting up with the General's shit, she was convinced she was going to heaven when she would die, and Patterson didn't get that because she was mean to him.
@laythewoodyard I was at the same show and screamed for joy when he played htis song.

My take on this song is it's a quilt of memories, good and bad, from his childhood. Being made so fearful to use an outhouse, a kid will hold it in for hours.

It's great song and an excellent example of what Hood does best: finding deep philosophy in the simplest things.

A box of spiders is what is used to terrorize children into behaving. Its a predecessor to the "elf on the shelf".... an empty threat that the kids are too young to know is empty.
"If you all act up; gran gran will go git the box"
