I feel this song is probably about a real coal mine but could also be a metaphor for choosing evil over good in the same way "cold as Ice" by The Foreigners portrays digging for gold be it black or real gold its like a sickness. Going after what cant be yours or what God has not laid out for you for any sin greed, lust, you name it.
