(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone Lyrics
I'm not your stepping stone
I'm not your stepping stone
You're trying to make your mark in society
Using all the tricks that you used on me
You're reading all those high fashion magazines
The clothes you're wearin' girl are causing public scenes
[Chorus]
I said
I'm not your stepping stone
I'm not your stepping stone
Not your stepping stone
Not your stepping stone
When I first met you girl you didn't have no shoes
Now you're walking 'round like you're front page news
You've been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose
But you won't find my name in your book of who's who
[Chorus]
I'm not your stepping stone
Using all the tricks that you used on me
You're reading all those high fashion magazines
The clothes you're wearin' girl are causing public scenes
I said
I'm not your stepping stone
I'm not your stepping stone
Not your stepping stone
Not your stepping stone
Now you're walking 'round like you're front page news
You've been awful careful 'bout the friends you choose
But you won't find my name in your book of who's who

ya the original was by the monkees but then the sex pistols did it so i believe thats why they did it
The Sex Pistols did this song because Paul Revere & The Raiders did it just before The Monkees released their own take on it. Their versions are pretty similar, although Paul Revere & The Raiders have more credibility than the faux-Beatles Monkees ever did. It's a silly, obsessive song from the view of a misogynist, which is why it's so good.
Original version was by the MOnkees, i believe. Which is a bit weird.
This was one of those songs that everyone in the scene covered. ilowis is right, most bands thought it was a Sex Pistols song.
Written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart. According to the Monkees Box Set "Listen to the Band", Paul Revere and the Raiders were the first to record it. It was on their album "Midnight Ride" which it says was released 6 months before the Monkees version. This Monkees box set also has a live version, which sounds a bit closer to the punk rock versions other bands did than to their studio version. The Monkees version was always one of my favorite Monkees tunes, but I like the Minor Threat version as well.
interesting story: once Minor Threat was set to play on a 7 band venue, and all seven of the bands played a cover of this song not knowning any of the other bands were going to.

I'm led to believe that the musical simplicity and the angry punk-like lyrics are the reason so many punk bands covered it.
Regardless, this is still an awesome version
