I'd Like Your Hair Long

i could hardly wait for my stars to fall in line and synchronize and shine

i love that line a ton.... it makes me think of not having your shit together and seeing those who do get ahead in life.

Here's my interpertation of this song:

Let's start things off by saying it really reminds me of a past relationship of mine and that's what I'm basing my interpertation off of.

I beileve this song starts off after the break up with someone who was loved by the person singing (or someone he knows?).

The lines: "i'd like your hair long and ladeled to the ground" Refers to how they love that person for themselves. Kinda like that saying about "letting your hair down." They love the person for who they are and wouldn't want them to change.

The next line: "but you'd prefer an astronaut" Shows how the other person broke up with them for someone who's head is in up in space. Pretty much a total idiot who has no idea what is going on in the world.

It continues by saying how they could relate to each other, because the person who broke up with the singer is not the brightest person either. It also states how in this new relationship the singer's ex is in the other person will do whatever they say and take "commands." (Which also could show the singer's ex was very bossy and controlling... possibly why they broke up.)

The part about the "simple man" shows how the singer feels about themself - which is that they are pretty basic when it comes to the relationship. All they need is love and respect.

"i could hardly wait for my stars to fall in line and synchronize and shine" - Reflects on how the singer really wants everything to be better for them and to be successful in their own eyes. Maybe that means to be in a good relationship.

"a wasted string of years, and a wasted string of lies it's still the same to me" - Tells how the singer knows this was a waste of his time and a bad relationship,but none the less, still loves the person.

"it's a waste of a song you're a waste of my lungs " - Could show how they have written many songs about the ex and tried to fix things by speaking to them, but knows this person will not go back with them.

"i'd like your face gone and in its place the sun and i would be an astronaut for i have come to surface to catch some light and feed and i have everything i need"

This part shows how the singer is in a new relationship and has become exactly what their ex was - someone with their head in the air (a snob) and someone who is an idiot (head up in space.) They think they have moved on and forgotten about the ex, but they also know taht their ex will always be apart of them. However, by this point in time they are pretending to hate the ex. They repeat the other parts to show that they secretly still feel the same as they use to, but know its a wate of thought.

That's how I think of this song. It's very sad when you think of it.

Matt said this song was about a women he dated for 22 years and she tried to make him into someone he wasnt and how she fucked him up. The chorus "its a waste of a song" goes on to say how he wasted this song by writing it about her.

I absolutely love HUM; they’ve been my favorite band since 1994, and I still listen to their albums monthly (usually on a road trip since they’re great from start to finish).

Back in college, I dissected “You’d Prefer an Astronaut” as term paper for an English comp class (we had to pick a piece of literature, and I argued the lyrics were poetry; the prof agreed). I no longer have the paper, but I still recall the gist of it.

For as beautiful and ethereal as the lyrics are, the album tells a relatively simple but heartfelt story of a relationship’s inception, duration and aftermath. In short: Little Dipper — two “star-crossed lovers” get together despite parental disapproval

The Pod — This relationship used to rock, but now it’s full of drug-related drama

Stars — The girl is becoming disillusioned, feeling that she’s missed better opportunities in life because of the choice to be together; resentment builds

The Suicide Machine — this is the man’s perspective. He feels like he’s stuck in a boring rut of the same old B.S.; drugs help him cope.

Very Old Man — the decision is made to break up. Ironically, the climax of the story is “softly recorded”

Why I like the Robins — After the break-up, the woman is hoping that all the guys who used to want her still will. The guy just wants to sleep around.

I’d Like your Hair Long — He’s annoyed and conflicted because he wants her back, but not the way she was. He’s angry that she wasn’t what he expected.

I Hate it Too — meaningless sex isn’t as awesome as it sounds; he misses her.

Songs of Farewell and Departure — this is kinda like when a play has a narrator who leaves the audience with some final thoughts about the “moral of the story” that was just told. So, the last few songs are almost like the stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. Eventually, the guy copes and is alright.

well in short this song is me...at least what i am dealing with right now... Buttens...
