False Faces Lyrics

Oil on canvas
Couplets and stanzas to divine who you are
Pencil portrayals and jealous betrayals
Get you further afar
Oh false faces and meaningless chases
I travel alone
Oh first places and calendar races
I need a home
Hostile hotel walls, footfalls and phone calls
And you're on the line
Gentle coercions and bitter desertions
When the truth is a lie
Oh false faces and meaningless chases
I travel alone
Oh first places and calendar races
I need a home
Lover twice yearly
That last battle nearly cost me the fight
Broke through the ice and got cut down to size
And escaped through the night
Oh false faces and meaningless chases
I travel alone
Oh first places and calendar races
I need a home

This is a very complex song as many of his songs are… my thoughts are that it’s a long distance occasional relationship as he says ‘twice yearly lover’ trying to understand a person‘s thoughts from far away if there’s anything there still, but he needs a home he’s hoping for a real relationship and true love. Setting dates and times hoping to find time. As is often the case, sincerity and truth is a big part of his underlying meanings and he wants to know if this person is true or not or if they’re just putting up a façade like ‘something on a canvas’. He questions if there is a betrayal, and if there’s somebody else involved. He’s weary of battles and being betrayed and being ‘cut down to size’. So if it’s not real sincere and true, he’d rather travel alone. OK there you have it. That’s my attempt at understanding a complex mind and creative artist. I’m sad to know he is gone, but I know he’s in heaven. MDC
