You Don't Know How It Feels [Album Version] Lyrics
Let me run with you tonight
I'll take you on a moonlight ride
There's someone I used to see
But she don't give a damn for me
But let me get to the point
Let's roll another joint
And turn the radio loud
I'm too alone to be proud
And you don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
To be me
People come, people go
Some grow young, some grow cold
I woke up in between
A memory and a dream
So let's get to the point
Let's roll another joint
And let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
And you don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
To be me
My old man was born to rock
He's still tryna beat the clock
Think of me what you will
I've got a little space to fill
So let's get to the point
Let's roll another joint
And let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
And you don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
No, you don't know how it feels
To be me
You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
No, you don't know how it feels
To be me
I'll take you on a moonlight ride
There's someone I used to see
But she don't give a damn for me
Let's roll another joint
And turn the radio loud
I'm too alone to be proud
You don't know how it feels
To be me
Some grow young, some grow cold
I woke up in between
A memory and a dream
Let's roll another joint
And let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
You don't know how it feels
To be me
He's still tryna beat the clock
Think of me what you will
I've got a little space to fill
Let's roll another joint
And let's head on down the road
There's somewhere I gotta go
You don't know how it feels
No, you don't know how it feels
To be me
You don't know how it feels
You don't know how it feels
No, you don't know how it feels
To be me

to me this embodies being a teenager. adults never really understand what it's like to grow up in this day and age, whether it's the 70s, the 80s, the 90s, or the 2000s. Kids always want to have a good time without being judged by their elders. "let's get to the point, let's roll another joint" is the epitome of a summer night spent smoking weed and fooling around. The location doesn't matter, which is why Tom Petty sings "let's head on down the road to somewhere".
I love the line "I woke up in between a memory and a dream." I think this feeling signifies the moment when a teenager realizes that "this is is, this is real life and I'm living it." They feel like they are stuck in between their childhood memories and their dreams of the future. It's a confusing time in any person's life.
