Its a bit obvious, based on the music video, he probably was in a relationship with someone who was not on the same culture, thus he said, she's "miles away," he tried to connect with her but, he just couldn't. He wants to forget about her but he can't, "I hear your name, in certain circles, and it always makes me smile."
This is not my original idea. Came from a Catholic priest discussing lyrics back in the Spring of 1985. In the chorus the guy is in such denial. The more he yells , the more he contradicts everything in the verses. No matter what "my friends say." So he is contradicting them too. I am now curious about the video based on Cluv's entry.
