This could be interpreted in multiple ways, however I always related to this song being about the period following a break up. For whatever reason, you are required to see your ex on a regular basis and have to remain friendly, be good and simple. The singer still has feelings (hearts cannot be broken, they bruise easily) and doesn’t want to forget what happened, or how they were hurt, just to keep the peace.
