Looks to be an homage to the year 1970. Jesus Christ Superstar the play came out. Beatles broke up, but George Harrison released his first solo album. I Dream of Jennie tv show ended. The mystical being with eyes of coal is Frosty the Snowman. Frosty tv animated movie came out in 1969, but the lyric writer maybe saw it in 1970. Frankincense and myrrh are two of the gifts of the magi for baby jesus, but are mentioned in the play Jesus Christ Superstar. Janus is the god of beginnings, gates, transitions, time, duality, doorways,[1] passages, frames, and endings." Wikipedia. The the writer is saying the transition from 1969 to 1970 was a gate of change where some things ended and some began new.
