Clifton in the Rain Lyrics

The rain came down like beads
Bouncing on the noses of the
People from the train
A flock of salty ears
Sparkled in the traffic lights
Feet squelched soggy leaves across the grain
I took my love to Clifton in the rain

And all along the way
Wanderers in overcoats with
Collars on parade
And steaming in the night
The listeners in the Troubadour
Guitar player weaves a willow strain
I took my love to Clifton in the rain

Jacqueline Bisset
I saw your movie
Wondered if you really felt that way
Do you ever fear
The images of Hollywood
Have you felt a shadow of its pain
I thought of you in Clifton in the rain

Cover art for Clifton in the Rain lyrics by Al Stewart

Has anyone ever learned which movie with Jacqueline Bisset that Al saw and inspired him? Could it have been 'The Sweet Ride'? As a 1968 movie, this timing is close. She had 3rd billing so this looks like her first significant credit.

Song Meaning

@10yearstoolate I always thought it was slightly later and referred to "The First Time".

@10yearstoolate That sounds like a better choice. That movie came out in Aug 1969. The next step is figuring out when Clifton was fist released. Best I can tell was the 1970 re-release of Bedsitter Images.
