Dead and Bloated [Live] Lyrics

I am smellin' like the rose
That somebody gave me
On my birthday deathbed
I am smellin' like the rose
That somebody gave me
'Cause I'm dead and bloated

I am smellin' like the rose
That somebody gave me
On my birthday deathbed
I am smellin' like the rose
That somebody gave me
'Cause I'm dead and bloated

Oh, oh, yeah, yeah
And she says it's natural
I feel I've come of age
When she peeks I start to run
Oh, oh, yeah, yeah
And she says it's natural
I feel I've come of age
When she peeks I start to run

You can't swallow what I'm thinkin'
You can't swallow what I'm thinkin'

I am smellin' like the rose
That somebody gave me
On my birthday deathbed
I am trampled under sole
Of another man's shoes
Guess I walked too softly

Oh, oh, yeah, yeah
And she says it's natural
I feel I've come of age
When she peeks I start to run
Oh, oh, yeah, yeah
And she says it's natural
I feel I've come of age
When she peeks I start to run

You can't swallow what I'm thinkin'
You can't swallow what I'm thinkin'

I run through the world
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
I run through the world
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow

I am smellin' like the rose
That somebody gave me
On my birthday deathbed
I am smellin' like the rose
That somebody gave me
'Cause I'm dead and bloated

I run through the world
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
I run through the world
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
I run through the world
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
I run through the world
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow
Thinkin' 'bout tomorrow

I am smellin' like the rose
That somebody gave me
On my birthday deathbed
I am smellin' like the rose
That somebody gave me, somebody gave me
Somebody gave me
On my birthday deathbed

I'm not sure about the birthday deathbed rose besides the imagery, colour, smell.

Birthday makes me think of birthday suit, naked. Deathbed ... Dieing naked ... Also ... Le petit mort ... And red is the most used colour for a rose ... Blood ...

Lots of connotations to be played with but I'm skewing these .... Towards ...

There's a definite religious theme with this album, which needs to be listened in entirety. This is the first song, the beginning, "coming of age". The core is the apple from garden of Eden says wiki.

"it's natural". ... Lots of things. Sex, nakedness, death, lust, desire, masturbation.

I didn't like this thought, but I'm gonna put it out there : an older woman trying to seduce a younger guy ... Or, a younger girl, a Lolita seducing a young guy - coming of age. This fits quite well with Adam n eve - eve the temptress.

When she peeks ... Peaks ... Being watched ... Rising ... Not really certain on this part.

"You can't swallow what I'm thinking" Later in album there's a definite feeling religion has caused shame when thinking about sex, this could be connected to that.

Swallow being a pretty obvious sexual connotation. Thinking lustful thoughts. "its natural."

"walked too softly" a desire to be bolder, bigger, louder, more, flows through the album along with sex and death.

"thinking about tomorrow" makes me think about the opposite "thinking about yesterday". What could be if he'd walk a bit louder, make an impact, ask the girl out etc.

Maybe when she peeks, he runs - when she looks his way, he's too shy, but maybe tomorrow ... Now I'm gonna go comment on next song ;)

My Interpretation

Your birthday deathbed is the day that you born you are marching to your deathbed. Birthday deathbed. I think this song is about a young man Who realize he’s born to die he’s trying to follow in his father‘s footsteps or somebody’s footsteps before him he’s not doing it right and you think about tomorrow the day that you can be free to be yourself. I run through the world thinking about tomorrow.

STP vocalist Scott Wieland, when asked about the lyrical inspiration behind "Dead and Bloated" replied:

"It’s not really about anything. It’s just stream-of-consciousness words. I mean, at the age of 21, 22, I didn’t have a whole lot of life experiences. So it’s more about the vibe, the angst and that kind of a thing, as opposed to actual life experiences."

According to STP guitarist Dean DeLeo, the main riff was Wieland's idea:

"Scott didn't really play an instrument. When he had an idea, he would hum it to me. And 'Dead and Bloated,' was one of those things; he hummed that verse riff to me."
