See My Friends Lyrics
See my friends,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
See my friends,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
She is gone,
She is gone and now there's no one left
'Cept my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
She just went,
She just went,
Went across the river.
Now she's gone,
Now she's gone,
Wish that I'd gone with her.
She is gone,
She is gone and now there's no one left
'Cept my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
She is gone and now there's no one else to take her place
She is gone and now there's no one else to love
'Cept my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
See my friends,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
See my friends,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
She is gone and now there's no one left
'Cept my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
She just went,
Went across the river.
Now she's gone,
Wish that I'd gone with her.
She is gone and now there's no one left
'Cept my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
She is gone and now there's no one else to love
'Cept my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river,
See my friends,
Layin' 'cross the river

In Storytellers Ray Davies plays this song after talking about his sister who had left for Canada and returned after the war. After a short time she died under tragic circumstances at the age of 30. I think it is not hard to put two and two together to figure out that this song is about the death of his sister and the sadness he felt at the suddeness and finality of her passing. Understanding this makes the lyrics much deeper and sadder. The melancholy of the lyrics and music become more apparent and you can feel his sorrow in your gut. Ray Davies lays it all on the line in this song, sharing his sadness with others who have lost their loved ones. Those friends laying across the river are all the good people who have gone from this world and are laid to rest. Man, it makes me hurt.
this song applys to me, if you get into a serious relationship, you see your friends less and less, but as soon as it falls apart you immediately need your friends back. the way he sings frieeeends cracks me up.
before I looked here, I thought it was "playin' 'cross the river' ! Kinda sounds like a kid crying when he says it, so I thought it was about a warzone or something!
" if you get into a serious relationship, you see your friends less and less, but as soon as it falls apart you immediately need your friends back." I agree, and I think, 'she' joined his friends, so now he has no one.
Sounds like a predecessor to "Love the One You're With", y'know, like he's relying on his pals for more than moral support.
