He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother Lyrics

The road is long
With many a winding turn
That leads us to who knows where, who knows where
But I'm strong
Strong enough to carry him
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

So on we go
His welfare is of my concern
No burden is he to bear
We'll get there

For I know
He would not encumber me
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

If I'm laden at all
I'm laden with sadness
That everyone's heart
Isn't filled with the gladness
Of love for one another

It's a long, long road
From which there is no return
While we're on the way to there
Why not share?

And the load
Doesn't weigh me down at all
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

He's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother
He ain't heavy, he's my brother

This is a song which was written in the late 60's. To me this song is a reflection of what what happening in the world at that time. Black people were struggling for their rights and not all whites were accepting this new change. The words: " he ain't heavy he's my brother" " his welfare is my concern" "while we're on the way to there... why not share" " if Im ladden ... I'm ladden with sadness that everyones heart isn't filled with the gladness of love for one another"

To me these lyrics were an appeal to humanity to accept one another, love another and share this beautiful world we all live in. Brilliant lyrics!

I can get that. It has a Gospel sort of lyric. I already replied to the other posting but will add it here. I think your view is basically right but goes a little further, about the way we treat each other and is offering the idea of 'brotherly love' as an alternative. The brother is you, me, everyone. The key is the third verse . If the whole song is viewed through that lens it works.

If that's the correct interpretation, what a great song of universal love. It should be an anthem for peace.
