The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion) Lyrics

See that girl, barefootin' along,
Whistlin' and singin', she's a carryin' on.
Got laughing in her eyes, dancing in her feet,
She's a neon-light diamond and she can live on the street.
Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.
Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.
Well everybody's dancin' in a ring around the sun
Nobody's finished, we ain't even begun.
So take off your shoes, child, and take off your hat.
Try on your wings and find our where it's at.
Hey, hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.
Hey hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.
Take a vacation, fall out for a while,
Summer's comin' in, and it's goin' outta style
Well, lie down smokin', honey, have yourself a ball,
Cause your mother's down in Memphis, won't be back 'till the fall.
Hey, hey, hey, come right away
Come and join the party every day.

" Try on your wings and find out where it's at" is more than just a regular old party. It's the same thing as saying "can you pass the acid test" The acid tests ,when acid was still legal ,being more or less where the Dead and haight ashberry got started .Haight Ashbery through the medium of LSD was the site of a spiritual reaniassance, that is still resonating. try on your wings isn't just about taking acid, but tuning into our existence as spiritual beings having a human experience. The title is 'The Golden Road to Unlimited Devotion" Not just a party song.

I love this song... You can really see the Beatles' influence on them in this one.

My Opinion

Or hear, I suppose... But if you're a true Deadhead you might be able to see it too...

A lot of references to Memphis on this debut album.

The song is about the Fillmore and Avalon days and women dancing and partying in Haight during the "Summer of Love".
