King of Nothing Lyrics

When I was seventeen I dreamed of being king and
Having everything I wanted
But that was long ago and
My dreams did not unfold so
I'm still the king of nothing

When I was seventeen I dreamed I gave a ring to
A pretty queen and then I held her
But that was slumber's fault for
I have no love at all and
I'm still the king of nothing

If I could rule I'd dance my cares away
Find romance every day
I wouldn't have to listen to this poor fool say
I'm the king
I'm the king
I'm the king of nothing

If I could rule I'd dance my cares away
Find romance every day
I wouldn't have to listen to this poor fool say
I'm the king
I'm the king
I'm the king of nothing

It is unbelievable that I am the first person to comment on this great song here in 2012.

This song is about a person who is getting up there in years who realizes that his youth's dreams are unrealized.

I thought he was going to have the cash and get the girl. Well it is years later and it is starting to become increasingly obvious that his life isn't going as well as he had hoped.

They say the most depressing year of a man's life is 43. That is because at that age you know whether or not you are going to be a success or not. The narrator in this song has come to the realization that he is going to be just another Joe Blow in life and it is depressing.

@JamesLove I'm responding to your comment, more than 9 years after you posted it, for I am just now seeing what you had to say for the first time and also because I found your perspective, illuminating and most likely, right on the money. Like you, I was also surprised that only you alone commented on this song. I remember liking this song when it was first released, when I was a child of six, perhaps seven years old. At the time, I feel it was the early'70s sound and vibe that appealed to me, just proactively discovering music in general and...

@JamesLove It's 2023 and I just came along to this site. I used to think this song was the story of my life. It was 1974 and I met a girl and new she would be my wife and we would have a family. I got her pregnant and we got married so I was the king and had everything I wanted. It wasn't long after that I found out my queen was a witch in disguise and I was really, the king of nothing! I stayed with her and had a 2nd child but I ended our marriage 2...
