Living Dead

This song is pure quality. How am I the first to be commenting? Living dead is about being numb to the point where all that motivates you to live is knowing you're going to die. She seems upset that she hasn't experienced love, almost like this may hold some answers. it's thoughts of you not bird eye view! massively hilarious. It's a difficult one to work out, sometimes I think Marina is just purposefully trying to be obscure, cryptic and whacky but it's just not obscure, cryptic or whacky enough to warrant that and she sings with such passion I'm pretty sure her mind's in motion when she wrote it. She talks about emptiness around her, it's almost just like she wants to capture the essence of death to try and live her best but when she thinks about it she equates her life with that because it's the thought she is gunna die that she is in tune with not the thought that she's alive. She seems to feel that her life might be different has she done things differently, it hints at regret, but when she says she thinks of all the men she could have kissed when she pulls back a glittering mist or whatever I'm not sure if she means she wished she had or that it's just so irrelevant because she's just looking to the sky to fulfil her dreams. I mean I don't know, the song is just bad ass.

I associate this song with depression. It implies throughout that she's miserably waiting for life to become wonderful and to progress as a person but she's 'permanently at square one'; she's constantly miserable and nothing ever changes despite her longing for it to. 'Got bubble wrap around my heart' suggests that she's terrified of getting hurt, which stops her from truly trying to break free from her misery. She seems to be fully aware and regretful of the fact that she's wasting her life, yet the weight of her depression makes it impossible to do anything about it. I think that 'living dead' refers to her feeling as if she's floating aimlessly around, lacking any enthusiasm for life. I don't think that she actually wants to die; she wants to be happy but she's unable to do so and so death seems more appealing than 'living dead'.

I loooooooove this song so much, Marina is such an amazing song writer it's unreal.

Some people think this song is about her wanting to die and what not but apparantly she said once in an interview that this song was about her starting over again. So I'm guessing this song relates to Electra Heart which is probably why it's on the next upcoming album.

I think this song is about depression, isolation and certain symptoms/conditions that can go along with that such as depersonalization, derealization, and even dissociation. Not only feeling disconnected because one isolates oneself, or one doesn't feel socially competent, but also feeling quite literally disconnected ("it's just a bird's eye view from up above", people who experience dissociation often describe it as watching oneself from above). When one experiences these things they often sort of feel dead inside, like they cannot experience life fully or experience emotions fully. I say all of this because I suffer from these things firsthand, and I feel Marina describes it perfectly here. Based on what we know about her history, I wouldn't be surprised if she has experienced this to some extent.
