there's no snow on the mountain
there's no river to cross
we've gone past it and we counted
now we're drinking our dust

there's no snow on the mountain
there's no water to drink
we sat back and we just counted
we didn't think
it's crazy
'cause it shouldn't be that hard
take care of everyone
we don't need petty guards
the only crimes left
will be ones of love
and when those acts go dark
you know it's bad enough
we signed up for extinction anyway
threw out our thinking caps
we gave our minds away

there's no snow on the mountain
there's no river to cross
we've gone past it and counted
now we're drinking our dust
but how many dreams
do we hold on to?
you've had so many
you're left with so few
but it's really all you ever did
been piling up wishes
since you were a kid
with so many pictures
and things to do
what you were just thinking
now you see right through
baby i've only got summer tires
but we're driving deep in your snow
baby i can't reach your wires
let it go

there's no snow on the mountain
there's no water to drink
we got past it and we counted
we didn't think
baby i've only got summer tires
but we're driving deep in your snow
baby i can't re-do your wires
let it go
they're on every broadway
the liar, the friend, the curious
the cold of heart
we did it our way
we used, we burned, we logged
we shipped, we scarred
we chose the scepter
we played the emperor card

Love this song- love how Nada Surf have that really bouncy, energetic, deep feeling to their music. You could dance along to this song, but at the same time really take meaning from the lyrics- which seems to be in regards to climate change, and how we as a human race have just ruined it all for our own, immediate gain.

Love the little bridge at the end too, just after he sings "Let it go"... amazing!

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?

Techno Ted may be a person who caused Chris incredible emotional pain & trepidation as well as moments of peace & happiness but now is removed and awaiting his fate. Darling may be a different person who is also free of him and can live her life free of Ted's tyranny. "In between all the laughing, and daydreams ... lies: a desert of truth" Lies are like a desert or the omission of Truth: Where there were Lies then Truth was absent. The song, "Techno Ted", may be a cathartic celebration of the downfall of this person.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
