I see it as a change in character. The path that he was once on would've led to something terrible. So he changed, and now he's embrasing the future. It could also be seen as a love song. Talking about how some relationships are not perfect, and he just wants to be perfect for that other person. Either way, the song is basically stating that if you don't like something, you can change it, and it's not the end. Things can get better.
