Spacetime Lyrics
For today, lives a brave new world made for us to decend.
But the endless night without gravity goes on and on forever,
One small planet and one small star, I'm sure you never dreamed that we'd get so far.
Lost in a curvature far away where the lights stand still. Stand still.
One small planet and one small star.
I'm sure you never dreamed that we'd get so far.
Lost in a galaxy far way as if time stands still.
The sky you see is not falling,
It's floating away in spacetime.
It's just strange we're so lonely in a world filled with so much,
But I can't reach out to the universe and touch the stars close to heaven.
One small planet and one small star.
I'm sure you never dreamed that we'd get so far.
Lost in a curvature far away where the light stands still.
The sky you see is not falling,
It's floating away, but the endless night without
gravity goes on and on forever.
In spacetime.
One small planet in one small star.
I'm sure you never dreamed that we'd get so far.
Lost in a galaxy far away as if time stands still.
The sky you see is not falling, it's floating away,
But the endless night without gravity goes on and on forever.
In spacetime.

I heard this song on the local radio out of commerce a while back but I couldn’t remember the name of the band or the song; only that the band had broken up, that they were from DFW, that the lead singer was a female and that the song was about space. It was bugging me so I emailed the DJ (Mike Meinke) and he figured it out based on my clues.
This song deserves to be a top 40 hit. It cleverly combines real science behind the universe with poetic relational parallels.
“For today, lives a brave new world made for us to descend. But the endless night without gravity goes on and on forever, One small planet and one small star, I'm sure you never dreamed that we'd get so far. Lost in a curvature far away where the lights stand still. Stand still.”
This first line sounds like a reference to Charles Darwin’s “Descent of Man” referring to human evolution. It then contrasts the complexity of life with the backdrop of the vast emptiness of space. The fact that we evolved randomly from single cell organisms is nothing short of unexpectedly miraculous. The curvature of light is a reference to Einstein’s theory of relativity. All objects in space-time (including planets) produce a curvature of light.
“The sky you see is not falling, it’s floating away in space-time. It's just strange we're so lonely in a world filled with so much, But I can't reach out to the universe and touch the stars close to heaven.”
Physicists say we are traveling through space-time, not falling or simply circling an unmoving star. The irony of loneliness on a planet full of life floating through the bareness of space is reversed with the realization of the distance between earth and the other stars in the sky.
For me the song combines an acknowledgement of the existential reality of the known universe with an undercurrent of hope shrouded in mystery propelling us onward. We are each small parts of something more, continually being pulled by forces we can’t fully understand into some kind of forever.
