Free Bird Lyrics

There's a tongue in my mouth, there's a lock on the door,
And I can't imagine wishing for more.
I've paid for my crimes and I've unlied my lies
And now I'm adorned with a clever disguise.

I'm free as a bird.
I'm free from my words.

There is a pill I've been meaning to swallow,
It's shaped like a record that I'd love to borrow,
And covered in shit I've been meaning to wallow in.
I don't know where I'll be tomorrow,

I'm free as a bird.
I'm free from my words.
I'm free as a bird flying over the sea who just can't find the summer.

If there's a god in the sky or a Devil below,
That doesn't matter to me.
Because I see Satan's face when I look in the mirror,
I see god inside all of the people I meet,

I'm free as a bird.
I'm free from my words.
I'm free as a man who's wandering the streets, looking for shelter.

I'm guessing that this song was written in part to provide an easy deterrent/response to hecklers.

in my mind its about a person who just got through a real heavy drug addiction. when someone finally decides its time to get clean, it feels weird to live life and not be obsessing about always having a bag of chemicals in your pocket. its a beautiful and new feeling that just being with a girl is all you could need. hes righted everything in his life that generally gets muddled in the life of a fiend and things have become all but normal again.

it starts to get hairy because although there is a real external happiness that you feel, there is a lingering internal emptiness. even though things are as good as they could be and the world has become your oyster, there is always a longing for an answer that just doesnt exist.

I think you're taking it too literally: AJJ is sarcastically referencing the song "Free Bird". The man in the song is free of obligation and restriction, but at the same time, he's so lonely and sad that his freedom feels bad. Just like a homeless person with no money is technically free to roam wherever they want with nobody to answer to and nothing to do but chill out, the man knows he's "free", but it's bittersweet, because he's actually just depressed and lonely.

He says he free, but his life is still shit, and he's lost.
